Missha cosmetic stores across Korea remodel to NUNC multi-brand shop - Pulse News

Korea's budget cosmetics brand Missha has rebranded its retail outlets NUNC to turn them into multi-brand shops to bolster sales.

According to cosmetics industry on Thursday, cosmetics maker Able C&C and its owner private equity fund IMM Private Equity have decided to remodel one-brand cosmetics shop Missha as multi-brand cosmetics store under new name NUNC. They will start the transformation project by remodeling directly-managed outlets first and allow franchisees to decide on joining the shift.

Missha as Able C&C's sole cosmetics label will stay unchanged. The cosmetics maker opened its first Missha store in 2000 and has grown as one of best-selling street beauty shop names. In 2004, sales topped 100 billion won ($84.5 million) and the company joined the country's secondary bourse Kosdaq in February 2005. Currently, Able C&C is listed on the main Kospi after moving in September 2011.

Business went down as shoppers increasingly turned to online platforms for beauty purchases.

The company incurred an operating loss of 18.9 billion won last year compared with 11.2 billion operating profit in 207 amid a sharp drop in the number of Chinese visitors to Korea due to Beijing's retaliatory measures against Seoul's deployment of U.S. missile defense system THAAD.

To revitalize the business, IMM Private Equity, which acquired Able C&C in April 2017 for 327.4 billion won in April 2017, has made aggressive investments including opening Missha mega store.

As of 10:39 a.m. Friday, shares of Able C&C are trading 1.66 percent higher at 12,250 won apiece.

Nevada Passes Cruelty-Free Cosmetics Act—Here's the Catch | PETA - PETA

Posted: 12 Jun 2019 10:18 AM PDT

Nevada has officially become the second state in the U.S. to ban the sale of cosmetics (including most personal-care products) tested on animals, following California. On June 2, 2019, Gov. Steve Sisolak approved The Nevada Cruelty Free Cosmetics Act (SB 197), which was introduced to state legislators in February by Sen. Melanie Scheible.

"The time has come to make cruel cosmetics a thing of the past and I am proud that Nevada is leading the way," said Scheible.

Like The California Cruelty-Free Cosmetics Act, Nevada's ban will take effect on January 1, 2020.

While the new law is certainly exciting progress, we're not quite ready to call this one a total victory for animals. Like the California act, it contains exemptions for products tested on animals to meet the regulatory requirements of federal, state, or foreign jurisdictions. In other words, products tested on animals in countries like China are not subject to the ban and can still be sold in Nevada.

If we truly want to "make cruel cosmetics a thing of the past," we must ban all testing on animals.

But don't fret, shoppers—PETA's got you (and animals) covered. Even when shopping in California or Nevada, be sure to consult our cruelty-free shopping guide to find products that haven't been tested on animals anywhere in the world. It's a surefire way to safeguard yourself from supporting cruelty like this …

… when shopping for cosmetics or personal-care items.

Support Companies That Never Test on Animals

No animal should ever be abused and killed for a product—or for any other reason. And with more than 4,000 cruelty-free companies in our database—including The Body Shop, Paul Mitchell Systems, and Tom's of Maine—shopping kindly has never been easier. Plaintiffs seek $1.2 million in damages from cosmetic firm - Aspen Daily News

Posted: 10 Jun 2019 02:00 AM PDT

After winning critical pretrial judgments in January, the parties in two lawsuits against a cosmetic company that operates two stores in Aspen are seeking just over $1.2 million in damages.

A Pitkin County judge is set to hear arguments Friday about damages involving California-based defendant Aspen Retail Management, the parent firm of Luxe Skin Spa and Aspen Beauty Boutique on the pedestrian malls — the latest development for the businesses that have been the subject of multiple lawsuits and numerous complaints to Aspen police.

The district court lawsuits set for Friday's hearing, as well as two others recently filed in Pitkin County Court, allege that employees of the outlets use high-pressure sales techniques to get residents and visitors to purchase expensive makeup products and beauty devices of dubious efficacy; possibly drugged one couple through glasses of champagne and pressured them into spending thousands more than they wanted; and lied about working with celebrities such as the singer Pink.

In filings for damages submitted last week, Aspen attorney Chris Bryan, representing Dean and Kim Reeves and, in a separate lawsuit, Cheron Berastequi, described the fallout from his clients walking by the stores, being enticed in with free samples and then bombarded by "an alarming pattern of abusive conduct perpetrated by" the defendants.

After walking into the shops, customers were often separated from their companion, trapped in the corner of the store or a back room of the store, and psychologically manipulated "with an all-out barrage of insults and compliments about their appearance," Bryan wrote.

Other accusations in the lawsuits were that employees:

  • used hand gestures and body language that made the victims feel that they were physically trapped in the store;

  • performed demonstrations on victims to show the "efficacy" of the products, the results of which inevitably wore off as soon as the victims left the store;

  • and falsely represented that the sales attendants were the beauty consultants for different pop icons, usually using the names of celebrities who were visiting Aspen at the time.

The Reeveses and Berastequi prevailed, leading to the filings for damages, after Aspen Retail Management failed to answer their lawsuits in a timely fashion. Bryan then moved for and received default judgments in each case. The company's general counsel, David Beitchman, argued in a filing that he had tried to consult with Bryan and didn't believe a formal response was necessary at that point. Judge Anne Norrdin of Pitkin County District Court ruled in the plaintiffs' favor in March, finding that Aspen Retail Management (ARM) failed to provide a reasonable excuse for why it never answered the litigation.

Beitchman, who could not be reached for comment about the latest filings for damages, said in March that his client may appeal.

The lawsuits accused ARM of violating the Colorado Consumer Protection Act for allegedly engaging in unfair and deceptive trade practices, according to one claim. Other claims included assault, battery and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

Dean and Kim Reeves entered the Hyman mall shop last summer. They were each given a glass of champagne that may have been drugged, as they soon felt "very confused and out of sorts," the lawsuit says. Employees began applying creams to their faces, against the couple's wishes, though "they were unable to refuse the demonstrations because they were so out of it, and the store attendants were so aggressive," Bryan wrote.

The couple provided a credit card and then filled out a shipping form in order to "escape the store and the high-pressure sales tactics employed," the lawsuit says. Once outside, they called the store repeatedly in an effort to cancel the order, which totalled nearly $22,000. The plaintiffs thought they were buying $700 worth of products.

In Berastequi's case, her lawsuit says she went into Aspen Beauty Boutique in September after being offered an eye-cream demonstration, and decided to purchase a product. An employee allegedly pressured her into buying a $9,000 light-therapy machine. Berastequi repeatedly told the employee that she could not afford it, but feeling increasingly uncomfortable and looking to leave, she handed over her credit card, confident her credit card company would decline the charges because of her credit limit.

But the employee said the charge went through without a problem — with one difference: He had charged her $21,000, Bryan wrote, adding she was unable to cancel the charge.

The Reeves are seeking economic and noneconomic damages, plus attorney fees, that total just under $600,000. Berastequi is seeking $619,401. The plaintiffs' lives have been impacted physically, mentally and emotionally, Bryan wrote, adding the Reeves were forced to empty their savings account to pay for the "fraudulent charges so as not to pay exorbitant credit-card fees."

Two separate lawsuits in county court against ARM are pending.

alberto caiola magnifies the beauty of flowers in shanghai shop - Designboom

Posted: 13 Jun 2019 01:10 AM PDT

part of an emerging new wave of contemporary florists, july's flowers in shanghai, china, reflects a fresh and edgy counterculture closer to fashion and design than traditional flower arrangements. smashing straight-laced stereotypes, july's challenges expectations at all levels and alberto caiola designed a shop to match.

the shape of the store turns blossoms into a natural window display

caiola incorporated a spectrum of materials, balancing brushed metal finishes with the natural textures of terrazzo flooring. expansive elements comprising of horizontal and angled mirrors positioned on the store's celling create the illusion of a much larger space. the effect appears to defy the laws of gravity, amplifying the volume's height.

a polished metallic finish draws attention, shifting according to the angle at which it's viewed

in stark contrast, exposed concrete beams reveal the building's original structure adorned by the flowers that become the store's natural centerpiece. displayed in clustered pots adjacent to large mirrored dishes, the result is a cornucopia of images, the blossoms reflected ad infinitum producing an intriguing effect.

indoor mirrors seemingly push themselves out of the building

navigating the space, visitors experience a movement of color and shape. a designated showroom area presents a selection of flower-related products, as well as a curated selection of design pieces. built on brilliance and transparency, the display quite literally glitters against the store's raw concrete background. it is not just the interior of july's flowers that seeks to disrupt the relationship between conventional and contemporary, but also its facade.

a flower explosion

the store stands out from its traditional residential context, since its polished metallic finish draws attention by shifting according to the angle at which it's viewed. at the same time, indoor mirrors seemingly extend out of the building, bouncing both natural and artificial light, which creates an enticing and inviting storefront. breaking barriers of tradition, expectations, and perception, caiola's interpretation of july's flowers defines shanghai in full bloom.
