YouTube virtual try-ons are here, starting with lipstick - CNET

Virtually try on different lipstick shades with YouTube's new AR feature.

Katie Conner/CNET

YouTube is the most popular video platform in the world, which is why any experiments with new technologies should make you sit up and pay attention. In this case, it's a new feature on YouTube for your phone that uses AR (that's augmented reality) to help you try on and even buy lipstick using your front-facing camera -- without leaving your living room.  The platform is already a powerhouse for product recommendations of all kinds. If successful, this could be the beginning of a new way to shop using AR.

For now, the new AR Beauty Try-On tool in the YouTube app for Android and iPhone lets you try on MAC lipstick while following along with beauty vlogger Roxette Arisa. Using this new feature can help you preview lipstick shades before you buy. It could even save you a trip from visiting the store -- if you find a color that looks damn good on you, you can buy it right then and there.

YouTube says it's exploring other makeup possibilities, so virtually trying on blush and eyeshadow shades could come next. Enjoy!

1. In the YouTube app, search for this video: Golden Goddess Makeup Tutorial using all my Holy Grail MAC products

2. Tap Try it on.

3. Next, tap OK.

4. Select OK to give YouTube access to your camera. You'll need to do this in order to use the feature.

5. The screen splits and you'll see yourself in the bottom half of your phone display, along with 24 lipstick shades to swipe through. Tap any color you're interested in trying on. Be careful when you move your mouth -- you might get fake lipstick on your teeth.

6. As you're selecting colors, you'll notice that the MAC shade names appear at the bottom of the screen. If you find a color you want to buy, tap Shop.

7. Tap again to open MAC's shopping cart in your preferred browser and checkout from there.

Apex Legends players raging over Iron Crown event cosmetic pricing - Polygon

Posted: 13 Aug 2019 03:13 PM PDT

Respawn Entertainment launched a major update to Apex Legends earlier today, featuring a new event called Iron Crown. The event is running for a limited time, and introduces exclusive cosmetics that players can only unlock while the event is live. Just a few hours after the launch of the event, the Apex Legends community made it clear that they are not happy at all with how these new cosmetics are being doled out.

The big issue with players, as expressed on places like the Apex Legends subreddit, seems to be the pricing and availability of the Iron Crown event packs. If you haven't played Apex Legends in a while, the pricing model can be a little tricky to crack, but the basics are that it'll run players 700 Apex Coins to open each Iron Crown pack, or about $7 in real money. There are 24 Iron Crown packs in total, two of which can be earned through gameplay, so players looking to unlock everything will have to throw down $154. Ouch.

For those that don't feel like they need every single cosmetic, they're still at the whims of the RNG of loot boxes, which means they could be $100 in the hole before getting a desired skin, even without duplicates in these boxes.

This post on the Apex Legends subreddit from u/HerpMcHerp does a good job summarizing players' complaints, but it's one of many posts that have bubbled up to the top of the subreddit since the launch of the Iron Crown event.

Given that Apex Legends is a free-to-play game, it's no surprise that cosmetics would be expensive, but tying a gambling mechanic in the form of loot boxes to time-limited cosmetics seems particularly harsh for players. We've reached out to Respawn to see if they have any response regarding the blowback.

6 Instagram-favorite beauty products that actually work - TODAY

Posted: 12 Aug 2019 05:32 AM PDT

It's no secret that social media sites like Instagram are becoming a great place to discover products and "life hacks" that seem too good to be true. At the same time, YouTube's also become a hub for beauty and style tutorials.

These days, you're more likely to find the next big skin care product on social media than at the beauty counter at your local department store.

NewBeauty's Editor-at-Large, Sarah Eggenberger, stopped by TODAY to share their list of social media favorites that are actually worth the hype.

From bestselling lipsticks to affordable toners, read on for the products that are taking social media by storm.

1. Hanacure Multi-Action Treatment Mask

Celebrities like Drew Barrymore, Busy Philipps, Kourtney Kardashian and more can't get enough of this Korean beauty mask, that was originally launched in 2017. The botanically rich solution almost instantly tightens and brightens the skin, minimizing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in just 30 minutes.

2. Tatcha Silk Canvas Protective Primer

This primer, which debuted in 2018 has become one of the most raved about beauty products and is a favorite among beauty influencers, according to Eggenberger. Simply apply a base coat before putting on your favorite foundation. It'll help makeup go on more smoothly and last longer. Since the formula doesn't soak into the skin, Eggenberger says it won't clog your pores or cause breakouts. Plus, the formula can even help to even skin tones on its own.

3. Pillow Talk Matte Revolution Lipstick

Per Eggenberger, social media has "played a significant role" in the success of this Charlotte Tilbury bestselling lipstick. According to the brand, one lipstick in the "Pillow Talk" shade is sold every two minutes — no wonder beauty influencers can't get enough of the shade! It's formulated with lipstick tree extract and orchid to help soften and smooth the lips. The neutral shade is designed to enhance the natural color of your lips, making universally flattering.

4. Thayers Witch Hazel

This internet favorite has over 5,000 reviews on Amazon and a 4.6-star rating. The formula contains witch hazel grown on a family farm in Fairfield County, Connecticut, exclusively for Thayers. The rosewater cleanses pores while witch hazel cleanses, tones and moisturizes, helping to clear breakouts and balance the pH level of the skin, according to Eggenberger.

5. Huda Beauty The Nude Eyeshadow Palette

This beautifully pigmented palette comes from Huda Kattan, a makeup artist and beauty influencer with over 3.3 million subscribers on YouTube, 1.2 million followers on her personal Instagram and over 38 million followers on her brand's page. Eggenberger said the 18 shades are flattering for all skin tones and available in an array of textures and colors that allow for endless combinations.

6. Skyn Iceland Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels

These eye gels are what Eggenberger describes as a "caffeine jolt to the face." Lack of sleep, aging and sun exposure can do a number on the skin under your eyes, and these patches can give you the effect of an eye lift in just 10 minutes. They use "potent actives" and Icelandic glacial water to firm, brighten, revive and soothe the skin under the eyes.
