Let's face it, the British and the Irish don't agree on much of anything. Certainly, not a religion, or politics, and more recently, even membership in the EC. But there is one thing the Brits and Irish have in common—the same foods.

Having trouble finding Colman's Mustard Powder? How about some Jacob's Biscuits? HP Sauce? How about some white or black pudding?

To many an Irish exile in New York, these comfort foods of home—or the lack thereof—has only increased their homesickness. But for the Irish in New York City there is relief in sight. And this relief comes in the shape of Myers of Keswick, a shop filled with the packaged treats of home, not to mention the best sausages in New York, the same sausages you'll enjoy in some of New York's finest restaurants.

It all started with Malachy McCourt and the Bells of Hell

The shop in question is Myers of Keswick, located on Hudson Street down in Greenwich Village. The man in charge is Peter Myers, from Keswick in the Lake District in northwest England, who has spent nearly the last 50 years working in the Village, first in the bars and for the last 31 years at his sausage shop.

The shop opened, Myers proudly proclaims, on July 4, 1985. Before that Myers was part-owner of the Bells of Hell saloon. The Bells, as it was known around the Village, was originally opened by Malachy McCourt on West 13th Street in the Village in the early 1970s. One of his barmen was a young immigrant from England, Peter Myers.

The Bells eventually closed under McCourt's stewardship and was reopened by Myers. It became the running mate of the legendary Lion's Head writer's bar down on Christopher Street as a steady stream of regulars from both places passed in the night on 7th Avenue perambulating between the two places. In its time the Bells was known for its music, featuring Turner & Kirwan: Larry Kirwan, future leader of the Black 47 Band, and Pierce Turner, seen here performing "I'm a Freeborn Man of the Traveling People"

Kirwan remembers the parade of celebrities who passed through the Bells: "Norman Mailer came a couple of times to see Turner & Kirwan of Wexford. Angela McCourt was also there quite often but that would have been in Malachy's time." He also remembers seeing all the Clancy Brothers, Joey Ramone of the Ramones, famed composer David Amram, not to mention a future Pulitzer Prize-winning author by the name of Frank McCourt.

Myers of Keswick hits Hudson Street

After he pulled out of the Bells of Hell, Myers went looking for a new venue. Being that his father, and his grandfather before him, were butchers, it was a natural progression that Myers should turn to the trade he grew-up in.

A friend told him of a shop that was for rent on Hudson Street between Jane and Horatio Streets. For years, it had been an Italian deli decorated with Provolone cheeses hanging from the ceiling. They had specialized in hero sandwiches for the working man and had become a staple in the neighborhood. Myers met with the former owner who now owned the building and a small, energetic business was born. The shop is right on the border of what is now one of the hottest neighborhoods in New York, the trendy Meatpacking District.

The shop looks much as it did in its Italian deli days—the refrigerators and counter display cases are the same—but the shelves are filled with products from the other side of the pond that the Irish and English cherish.

An exiled Irishman's first impression? "My mother would have loved this place!"

Myers estimates that he imports over 300 products from England. The shelves are filled with the likes of Marmite, Sarson's Malt Vinegar, Branson's Pickle Chutney, Colman's Mustards, HP sauce, Jacob's Biscuits, a wide variety of teas, and more crisps—that's potato chips for the uninitiated—products than you guessed existed.

His biggest seller? Would you believe Heinz Baked Beans? It's true. The beans are grown in the U.S. and Canada, shipped to England for processing, and return home to be sold at Myers of Keswick. Myers calls them "the most traveled beans on the planet."

There are all kinds of sweets (Myers says that Cadbury Flake is his bestseller) and the refrigerator is filled with sodas that no American has ever heard of. His number one soda pop? IRN-BRU, a sarsaparilla tasting soda that is famous as a hangover cure and, according to Myers, outsells Coca-Cola in Scotland.

5

Chipolata and Bangers? This way

But what Myers is famous for are his homemade sausages and other goods, all cooked in the back of the store. His link sausages, called Chipolatas, are the best in the city. They are seated next to his plump bangers, which even without the "mash" are a meal in themselves. Next in line are his Cumberland sausages.

But that's only the beginning. His food display case is an amazing assortment of delicacies. There's a cornucopia of pies: Shepherd's, Pork, Sausage Roll, Pork & Stilton, Cornish Pastry, Chicken & Mushroom, Cheese, Onion and Potato, Chicken & Leek, Steak & Ale and Curried Lamp. It's all topped off by the heart-attack inducing Scotch Egg. (For the uninitiated, that's a hardboiled egg wrapped in a hard sausage.) Myers also provides Kerrygold Butter and Donnelly's Black & White Puddings.

Myers two busiest seasons of the year are the weeks leading up to Christmas and St. Patrick's Day. He estimates that 90% of his customers are either Irish or British. At Christmas time, it is not unusual to see lines stretching to the corner as customers try to get in and get things such as Christmas puddings and Bird's Instant Custard. St. Patrick's Day is extra busy as Myers is supplying sausages to Irish pubs for their Irish breakfasts.

New York restaurants are an important part of Myers business. He supplies all of famed restauranteur Keith McNally's New York operations—such as Pastis and CafĂ© Luxembourg—with sausages. In addition, he supplies Irish pubs such as Swift's on East 4th Street and the Dead Rabbit Grocery and Grog down on Water Street near South Ferry.

As the Bells of Hell was a magnet for celebrities, don't be surprised if you bump into Keith Richards, Rod Stewart or even Naomi Campbell at Myers of Keswick. The late British actor, Edward Woodward, famous as TV's The Equalizer, was also a regular.

With the Christmas rush over, the St. Patrick's Day madness is about to commence, Myers and his daughter Jennifer Mary, who acts as a manager/owner, are bracing themselves for a Celtic invasion, an Irish insurrection in search of the comfort foods of home.

6 groceries you should always buy at Kroger - CNBC

Posted: 16 Jun 2019 05:41 AM PDT

For many Americans, Kroger is their local, go-to grocery store — the Cincinnati-based retailer operates close to 2,800 stores in 35 states.

In fact, Kroger not only operates its own brand of stores, it has 24 store affiliate brands spread across the country, including City Market, Dillons, Fred Meyer, Harris Teeter, King Scoopers, Ralphs and Smith's.

With such a wide footprint, Kroger offers a lot of promotions and programs to help you save money on your everyday groceries and essentials. Here are six things experts say they buy at Kroger all the time and they recommend shoppers check out on their next grocery shopping trip.

Meat

It's worth the trip to Kroger for the well-priced high quality meat, both organic and traditional cuts. "The meat is a really good value. Their meat sales actually beat the Aldi and Walmart prices consistently," Laurie Hise, founder of the Passionate Penny Pincher site, tells CNBC Make It.

Kroger has all-natural, 93% lean ground turkey on sale for $3.99 per pound, according to a weekly ad for a Cincinnati-based Kroger. In comparison, a nearby Walmart is selling similar ground turkey from Butterball for $4.32 per pound.

Plus, many locations have an in-house butcher, which can be a great value for savvy shoppers. For example, they will chop up a roast into stew meat, saving you time at home and usually a few cents off a pre-cut package of the same meat. "If you're willing to ask for it, they'll do it," Demer says.

Produce

The price of fresh fruits and vegetables are very "reasonable" at Koger, Hise says. For example, Kroger has red, seedless grapes on sale for 88 cents per pound (normally $1.99), which is cheaper than Walmart's $1.97 per pound, according to prices for grocery pickup for stores based in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Kroger also has great clearance areas scattered throughout the store, including on produce, which Demer says is rare among grocery chains. For example, her local Fred Meyer packages $5 mixed bags of fruit that is ripe and should be eaten right away.

At Demer's Fred Meyer, red "WooHoo" and yellow price labels are used to indicate sale items — usually on products that are approaching their "best by" date. The label may vary slightly among the Kroger affiliate stores, but Demer says you can usually find these items at the end of aisles or near the stockroom.

Store brand items

"All of the store brand stuff is fantastic," Hise says. Plus, she says Kroger brands end up being cheaper than name brands — even if there's a sale: If Jif is on sale for $1.29, for instance, the Kroger brand will drop to 99 cents.

Kroger has over a dozen store brands, including its Simple Truth (natural foods) and Simple Truth Organic, as well as gourmet offers under its Private Selection and HemisFares labels.

Demer says that while Kroger store brands may not compete with those offered by industry leaders such as Trader Joe's or Costco, they are a solid choice and provide good value for shoppers.

Cereal

Kroger, like most traditional grocery stores, has a lot of sales. And that's when Demer says you should stock up on everyday essentials like name-brand cereal. This week, Kroger is offering buy one, get one deals on varieties of Special K and Quaker cereals. Kroger sells Kellogg's Special K cereal for $3.79 for a 12-ounce box.

If you really want to save, experts say don't miss Kroger's Mega sales (also called "Cart Busters" or "Mix & Match" at some locations). "Their Mega sales are fantastic, so whenever they have one, taking advantage of that is a huge saver," Hise says. "Just get on their sale cycle and follow it."

The Mega Sale is a regular store promo that happens at least once a month. The details vary, but many times it's set up as a "Buy 5, Save $5" sale. If you purchase five participating items you'll save $5 at the checkout.

Wine

Kroger has two ways to buy wine, in-store and online. If you're in the store, you can typically save 10% by buying six bottle. Plus you can mix and match whichever bottles appeal to you. The average cost of a bottle of red wine is about $15, so by taking advantage of this deal, you can likely save around $9 on your total.

Kroger also offers an online wine shop and subscription club, where you'll get a curated selection of 12 wines sent to you four times a year. Through Kroger Wine, the retailer's online service, you can also select bundles of four, six or 12 bottles of wine and the store will ship them directly to your house. Shipping is free when you spend at least $35.

Gas

It's not exactly a grocery staple, but many Kroger locations have a branded gas station attached to the store. And by filling up there you can save you real money.

The retailer's fuel points program is available to members of its Kroger Plus Shopper's program. Members earn 1 fuel point for every $1 you spend. You also earn 2 points on gift cards and 50 points for qualifying prescriptions picked up at Kroger's pharmacy.

For every 100 points, you'll earn 10 cents off per gallon at Kroger Fuel Centers and participating Shell gas stations. You can redeem up to 1,000 fuel points in a single fill-up at Kroger Fuel Centers for $1 off per gallon. Plus, shoppers with the Kroger REWARDS World Mastercard receive an additional 25 cents off per gallon for the first year.

The spokeswoman for Kroger confirmed to CNBC Make It that you earn fuel points across all the Kroger family of stores. Plus Kroger and its brands regularly run specials. Currently, Kroger is offering a coupon for 2x fuel points through June 23, 2019. And the stores regularly offer extra fuel points on specific purchases. This week that includes 3x points on LaCroix sparkling water, Fage Greek yogurt and Wish-Bone salad dressing, among others.

Here's How To Stream BTS' 5th Muster So You Don't Miss A Single Moment - Elite Daily

Posted: 06 Jun 2019 01:47 PM PDT

June is the month of BTS. There, I said it. Why, you ask? June 13 marks six years of the group being together. To celebrate the special anniversary, BTS holds their annual FESTA event for the two weeks leading up to the date. As per FESTA tradition, the guys shared special content for their fans like a dance practice video of "Mic Drop," Jin's solo song "Tonight," and a GoPro video of BTS performing "Anpanman" live in concert. With FESTA coming to a close in just over a week, BTS has moved on to another special event: their 5th Muster. In case "Muster" is an unfamiliar word to you, it basically means "a formal gathering of troops," aka BTS' fans — the ARMY (get it?). The Muster events are really special shows held by BTS for their fans, so you definitely can't miss it this year. If you're wondering how to stream BTS' 5th Muster, no worries, because it's actually really simple.

This year, BTS' 5th Muster will be centered around the theme of "Magic Shop." The event shares a title with BTS' song of the same name off of their album, Love Yourself: Tear", released in May 2018. The guys performed their song "Magic Shop" throughout 2018 on their Love Yourself tour, and it has become a fan-favorite because of the line, "So show me, I'll show you," which BTS and their ARMY sang as a call and response whenever BTS performed it. Unfortunately, the guys didn't include the song on their set list for their Love Yourself: Speak Yourself tour this year, but here's hoping BTS will perform it at their 5th Muster. I mean, you can't have the theme be "Magic Shop" without including the song, right?

BTS has been teasing their 5th Muster since March 28, so you can imagine how excited fans are to finally experience the show. Part 1 of the 5th Muster will happen on June 15 and 16 in Busan, South Korea at the Busan Asiad Auxiliary Stadium, while Part 2 will be on June 22 and 23 in Seoul at the Olympic Gymnastics Arena.

Similar to BTS' Love Yourself: Speak Yourself concert at Wembley Stadium, which was streamed live through VLIVE, the group's 5th Muster will also be streamed on both the VLIVE website and app. On May 7, the official VLIVE Twitter account announced that although there are four shows for the 5th Muster, only the final show on Sunday, June 23 in Seoul will be streamed live. The event will happen at 7 p.m. KST, which is 6 a.m. EST and 3 a.m PST stateside. I know, that's really early for international fans, but that's just what happens when you stan a K-Pop group right?

Since BTS' 5th Muster is considered exclusive content on VLIVE, fans will have to purchase the event in order to stream it. The 5th Muster costs 1000 VLIVE coins, which is about $18. You can purchase access to the stream by heading over the the VLIVE website.

The stream for the 5th Muster will be extra special since VLIVE is offering fans a few different ways to watch the event. Apart from the main cam (main view), the app will also give fans the opportunity to watch the show from different angles. After the live show, the app will then upload the 5th Muster at a later date so fans can replay it as many times as they want.

Here's what VLIVE said about the 5th Muster stream:

You can watch the 2nd performance live streaming of the BTS fan meeting "BTS 5TH MUSTER [MAGIC SHOP]" in Seoul. In addition to the main cam, you can choose the cam of the desired angle and enjoy the stage more vividly during the live. After the live streaming is finished, replay VOD will be available after review.

With that info, no wonder why fans are so hyped for the 5th Muster! It will truly be a once-in-a-lifetime performance.
