Pout Beauty Bar in NoHo Is Helping Normalize Makeup for Men - LA Magazine

Makeup artist Nicole Faulkner, aka Lipsticknick, made a name for herself (literally) as a beauty influencer with 725,000 Instagram followers, which she parlayed into a gig creating outrageously glam looks on Rupaul's Drag Race. As the stigma around men wearing makeup gradually fades away, Faulkner is going all in on boy beauty. Earlier this week, her new "glam oasis" Pout Beauty Bar opened in North Hollywood.

Faulkner and business partner Esther Koop describe the new venture as a "first-of-its-kind, boundary-pushing beauty space," geared toward both women and men (and non-binary people, of course), offering everything from "simple mens makeup" to "extreme drag looks."

Pout's bold mission pairs nicely with its bold interiors, where everything pops with fuchsia, graffiti, and glowing neon light sculptures. Services include human hair faux eyelash application, glitter application, special effects makeup, and body painting. The brands sold at the salon are all curated from Nicole's own kit: L.A.-based beauty lines Jeffree Star Cosmetics, Lemonhead L.A., Miss Casanova, Morphe, the Crème Shop, and Togo Spa.

What got Lipsticknick into the boy beauty biz? We decided to find out.

How did you get your start in beauty?

I've been doing makeup since I was 17. I did friends for dances—and suddenly there was a line at my house in Corona. Slowly, I began to dabble in drag and special effects. I've always loved Rupaul and Jeffree Star, and transformative makeup, changing the shape of the lips and eyes. It takes a very special set of skills. I also learned body and face painting, and did shows for Carnival Cruise lines. Through Instagram, I caught the attention of [Drag Race judge] Michelle Visage, and came on and did her makeup for seasons five and six. I've been doing it ever since. I get to hang with Ru on the set, who's very complimentary. And of course, I'm inspired by the queens.

Where did you come up with your alias?

It was for Instagram, of course.

What was the impetus for opening Pout?

I moved into this building in North Hollywood a few months ago—in the Arts District. This leasing office called me one day and said, "We have a live-work space near Lankershim." I called Esther and said, "I have this idea—do you think its crazy?" Clearly she didn't.

"I'm a firm believer that all products are unisex. You can't put a gender on products."

What does Pout have that no other beauty bar has?

So many things! Lemonhead, an L.A. beauty brand, did these great glitters with jellies, to be a liner or a shadow. They created one specially for Pout: "The Pout Potion," a rose gold with pops of pink and champagne. We sell Jeffree Star, Lauralee Los Angeles, and Miss Casanova, among others. And I'm a firm believer that all products are unisex. You can't put a gender on products. We can do everyday makeup, but also very high-glam and fantasy [looks].

Pout, 11135 Weddington St., #129, North Hollywood.

'You can't beat the price': This high-end beauty dupe is 50% off at Sephora this week - Yahoo Style

Score huge deals on these cult-favourite items this week at Sephora.

The best in beauty products are often hard to come by, especially when you have zero intent to splurge. But from our experience, sometimes the best products are hidden in the sale section.

Whether you're a makeup newbie looking to build a routine or an experienced artist who is looking to build their kit, we've rounded up the best-selling makeup products and tools that are on sale at Sephora right now.

From luminizing drops to a cooling eye primer to luxury face brush set, scroll through our picks below:

Face:

SEPHORA COLLECTION Radiant Luminizing Drops

Customer Review: "Love this! After using primer, I put a few drops of this all over my face, followed by foundation (usually Dior Forever or Fenty Pro Filt'r). This provides a nice subtle radiance and takes always the harsh matte appearance that these foundations have. A great alternative to Becca's Skin Perfector liquid, much cheaper!"

Shop it: $6 (originally $19), Sephora

Smashbox Step-By-Step Contour Kit

Customer Review: "This has been one of the best makeup products I've ever used. Super easy and great for both an everyday or glam look. All colours look great with my skin tone and blend beautifully. I even have used it for eye shadow on those mornings I'm in a rush."

Shop it: $40 (originally $54), Sephora

SEPHORA COLLECTION Beauty Amplifier Mattifying H2O Gel Primer

Customer Review: "The Becca mattifying primer is my go to primer but this is better to me. It's much cheaper and it doesn't give the super dry crusty feeling I get with the Becca one. Mattifying primers are tricky. You have to pat them in. You can't rub the way you do with other primers or it creates a mess. Use the same way you would use the Becca primer and lightly pat on the areas you need to mattify. This and the Sephora brand primer that fills in pores will be my go tos this summer and you can't beat the price."

Shop it: $6-9 (originally $11-20), Sephora

MILK MAKEUP Holographic Highlighting Powder

Customer Review: "I was totally blown away by this highlighter. I have pale skin, so a lot of highlighters are either too dark or don't show up on my skin, but the supernova colour gave me the perfect subtle purple highlight. you can blend it out to be a little more sheer, or build it up for a super pretty eyeshadow. I/m in love!"

Shop it: $16 (originally $31), Sephora

Eyes

SEPHORA COLLECTION Mixology Eyeshadow Palette

Customer Review: "This palette is awesome! This is great if you're like me who isn't the best at picking out which colours to put together. They shadows are really pigmented, they apply very easily, and the brush is literally the best out of all the brushes I own. This brush can blend like no other!"

Shop it: $19-24 (originally $43), Sephora

Kat Von D 10th Anniversary Eyeshadow Palette

Customer Review: "GORGEOUS! So creamy and smooth. I was lucky enough to find it at the store about a week ago and I was stunned! The shimmers are kind of this duo chrome type and it's just the most beautiful palette I've ever seen in my life."

Shop it: $31 (originally $62), Sephora

SEPHORA COLLECTION Tinted & Cooling Eye Primer

Customer Review: "Does everything a primer should for half the price of the other ones! Goes on best with a beauty blender. A little goes a long way! Great product and lots of product for a great price! This will last me a long time! Thank you Sephora!"

Shop it: $8 (originally $18), Sephora

Lips

Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche Liquified Lipstick

Customer Review: "Holy grail lipstick formula and colour! Matte liquid lipsticks are too drying and look gross after a while but are long-wearing. Traditional lipsticks are comfortable but never last more than 1-2 hours on me. THIS combines the longevity of a liquid lipstick with the comfort of a traditional lipstick."

Shop it: $14 (originally $28), Sephora

Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche Liquified Lipstick

Customer Review: "I have tried so many lip glosses out on the market, I've lost count. I have terribly dry lips, getting worse as i get older, and i'm always looking for a gloss that will LAST, so i don't have to keep re-applying it. This one does that. And it looks good while doing it. I try to order at least 2 or 3 at a time anymore so I never run out."

Shop it: $5-11 (originally $16), Sephora

Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche Liquified Lipstick

Customer Review: "I bought this set on impulse and I wound up falling in love with all the shades. I love the range of colours and it's a mix of fashionable colours and wearable colours. There's something for everyone here. I also love how it was packaged. If you're a lipstick junkie, this is the set for you!"

Shop it: $132 (originally $190)

Brushes

SEPHORA COLLECTION Oh So Matcha Brush Set

Customer Review: "I love the colour. The packaging is super cute. They actually have some weight to them despite the size. The face brush could be a dupe for a high end brush already on the market. Such a steal!"

Shop it: $11 (originally $18), Sephora

Kat Von D 10TH Anniversary Brush Set

Customer Review: "The same vegan and cruelty free brushes from KVD, but In a beautiful golden metal. Handle is also metal so it has a good weight distribution, does not feel cheap at all. If you already know you love these brushes I highly recommend getting the gold set, yes it is just a different colour but the price is actually better vs buying them individually!"

Shop it: $75 (originally $150), Sephora

Sephora Collection PRO Fan Highlight Brush

Customer Review: "Perfect size and shape for applying highlighter in exactly the right place. I've used bigger highlighter brushes before, as well as fan brushes, but this one combines the best of all the designs. It's soft and small, and it picks up the right amount of product. I like a subtle highlight so this is perfect to just pop a tiny bit on my face, and down the centre of my nose."

Shop it: $15 (originally $30), Sephora

SEPHORA COLLECTION PRO Shader Brush

Customer Review: "I love this brush. I use it to get my brow bone and inner eye corner. It has the precision and somewhat wide enough size to apply a good amount of eyeshadow. This is my daily brush."

Shop it: $11 (originally $22), Sephora
