Pout Beauty Bar in NoHo Is Helping Normalize Makeup for Men - LA Magazine

Posted: 20 Jun 2019 02:24 PM PDT

Makeup artist Nicole Faulkner, aka Lipsticknick, made a name for herself (literally) as a beauty influencer with 725,000 Instagram followers, which she parlayed into a gig creating outrageously glam looks on Rupaul's Drag Race. As the stigma around men wearing makeup gradually fades away, Faulkner is going all in on boy beauty. Earlier this week, her new "glam oasis" Pout Beauty Bar opened in North Hollywood.

Faulkner and business partner Esther Koop describe the new venture as a "first-of-its-kind, boundary-pushing beauty space," geared toward both women and men (and non-binary people, of course), offering everything from "simple mens makeup" to "extreme drag looks."

Pout's bold mission pairs nicely with its bold interiors, where everything pops with fuchsia, graffiti, and glowing neon light sculptures. Services include human hair faux eyelash application, glitter application, special effects makeup, and body painting. The brands sold at the salon are all curated from Nicole's own kit: L.A.-based beauty lines Jeffree Star Cosmetics, Lemonhead L.A., Miss Casanova, Morphe, the Crème Shop, and Togo Spa.

What got Lipsticknick into the boy beauty biz? We decided to find out.

How did you get your start in beauty?

I've been doing makeup since I was 17. I did friends for dances—and suddenly there was a line at my house in Corona. Slowly, I began to dabble in drag and special effects. I've always loved Rupaul and Jeffree Star, and transformative makeup, changing the shape of the lips and eyes. It takes a very special set of skills. I also learned body and face painting, and did shows for Carnival Cruise lines. Through Instagram, I caught the attention of [Drag Race judge] Michelle Visage, and came on and did her makeup for seasons five and six. I've been doing it ever since. I get to hang with Ru on the set, who's very complimentary. And of course, I'm inspired by the queens.

Where did you come up with your alias?

It was for Instagram, of course.

What was the impetus for opening Pout?

I moved into this building in North Hollywood a few months ago—in the Arts District. This leasing office called me one day and said, "We have a live-work space near Lankershim." I called Esther and said, "I have this idea—do you think its crazy?" Clearly she didn't.

"I'm a firm believer that all products are unisex. You can't put a gender on products."

What does Pout have that no other beauty bar has?

So many things! Lemonhead, an L.A. beauty brand, did these great glitters with jellies, to be a liner or a shadow. They created one specially for Pout: "The Pout Potion," a rose gold with pops of pink and champagne. We sell Jeffree Star, Lauralee Los Angeles, and Miss Casanova, among others. And I'm a firm believer that all products are unisex. You can't put a gender on products. We can do everyday makeup, but also very high-glam and fantasy [looks].

Pout, 11135 Weddington St., #129, North Hollywood.

How to Get Glowing Skin With Minimal Makeup - The New York Times

Posted: 20 Jun 2019 02:03 AM PDT

There is no shortage of suggestions on Instagram for achieving a radiant complexion: the hashtag #glowingskin alone has more than three million posts that recommend a multitude of shimmery products — from gold-flecked highlights to glimmering bronzers to glitter-laced gelées — all of which, when layered on the skin, can create a lustrous effect. But the results don't always look natural. For those who prefer a more low-key sheen — a subtle dewiness that suggests the afterglow of a hike or yoga session — a new batch of sheer water-based tints and light-reflecting creams, made with hydrating ingredients and only a hint of shimmer, offer a subtler way to illuminate the skin. "It's a fresher finish," says the New York-based Chanel makeup artist Cyndle Komarovski of the luminous bare-skin look she's increasingly asked to create, adding that, with the right product, "it looks as if your skin drank a big glass of water." Here, a guide to achieving a beautiful, minimal-makeup glow.

[Coming later this spring: the T List newsletter, a weekly roundup of what T Magazine editors are noticing and coveting. Sign up here.]

A good exfoliation routine eliminates dullness so that skin naturally reflects light. The Connecticut-based dermatologist Sarah Dolder, M.D., recommends a "very gentle chemical exfoliant for daily use," such as Restorsea Pro's Intensive Treatment 10x lotion ($195). Once a week, try Dermaflash ($150), a manual microblading device that carefully removes dead skin with a sterile blade and sonic vibrations (it might sound scary, but the process is entirely painless; just hold your skin taunt and use short strokes). Finish with a plumping moisturizer, such as Tatcha's Dewy Skin Cream ($68) with hyaluronic acid and calming algae.

As an alternative to heavy cover-up, Komarovski prefers the new generation of water-based tinted gels — such as Chanel's Les Beiges Water-Fresh Tint ($65), which, she says, "evens out your tone but allows your natural skin to shine through." Pump a bit on the back of your hand, buff with a brush and dab on, working from the center of the face outward to ensure you don't miss a spot. Or, spike your foundation "with a drop of face oil if your skin is very dry," recommends the Montreal-based facialist Jennifer Brodeur; you'll slightly dilute the formula so it has a more transparent effect on the skin.

To minimize puffiness without makeup, massage around the eyes with an ice cube — a cryotherapy-like method that brings down swelling and "also tightens the skin," says Brodeur. From there, you can tap on a concealer sparingly: Sisley-Paris's Stylo Lumière ($65) comes with a sponge tip applicator so you can target specific areas — the sides of the nose, under the eyes — quickly. A dab in the inner corners of the eyes also helps brighten the entire face, says Brodeur: "It's a small area that offers a huge impact."

Well-applied makeup should enhance your normal complexion — "not get rid of your natural coloring by making your skin one tone," says Komarovski. A multitasking balm can liven up your face in spots where the sun normally hits — the tops of the cheeks, under the brows, the bridge of your nose. Westman Atelier's Super Loaded ($75) highlighter combines antioxidant-rich jojoba oil with a peachy-bronze tint while Chantecaille's water-based Aqua Blush ($44) comes in a range of tones, from coral to berry, and melts in with a cooling sensation.

For touch-ups during the day, skip the makeup and try a hydrating mist instead, says Brodeur, who travels with La Bruine Vitaminée ($45), from her own skin-care brand, Lumi. A few spritzes should be enough to restore your glow. "The less you manipulate the skin, the better it will look," she says.

The Exact Skincare Routine That Gets Olivia Culpo's Skin So Glowy - Women's Health

Posted: 20 Jun 2019 04:00 AM PDT

Eric Ray Davidsom

Ever since being crowned Miss Universe in 2012, Rhode Island native Olivia Culpo has been causing serious skin envy around the world. Now 27, the model/influencer credits her previous pageant life with inspiring her love of a solid skincare routine.

"When I was modeling and competing in Miss Universe I was using so much makeup and I started to really understand what it can do to your skin if you sleep in it and don't let your skin breathe," she said. And what would happen if she wasn't diligent? "I used to get cystic acne and I hated trying to cover it up—and it can hurt! Once I started being regimented about my skincare that cleared up."

Although Olivia is a self-admitted fan of a skincare routine, she prefers to take more of a holistic approach to her skin health. "I believe skincare starts from the inside out so I take care in what I eat and drink because I know that can affect your skin too," she says. That includes drinking "tons of water"—"I see the biggest impact from drinking a gallon of water a day," she says. It makes sense then that she says her skincare mantra is "stay hydrated!"

Olivia sees skincare as an act of self-love. "I am a big believer in self-care overall which means taking time to work out, meditate, spend the day at the spa, etc. And that includes taking care of my skin," she explains.

Speaking of the spa, Olivia loves facials. "I try to go whenever I can. Sometimes I go to the spa at my hotel when I am on the road but I also have my favorite places in LA and NYC like Joanna Vargas and Dr. Barbara Sturm," she says. "I am always open to trying new facials and have experimented with laser and microdermabrasion." But one facial she isn't so eager to try out: "I heard there is a penis facial in NYC—what?!"

If you're not as skincare obsessed as Olivia, she has some advice as to why you should stick with it: "It takes some discipline, but it's worth it in the end," she says. "It's easier to take care of your skin every day than try to cover up blemishes later—although sometimes that happens no matter what you do!"

And her biggest skincare secret? "Confidence and happiness make skin glow."

Ready to feel more confident and happy in your own skin? Try out some of Olivia's favorite products from her very own skincare routine.

Mary J. Blige: "Black Lipstick Was Armor For Me — But I'm Not Hiding Anymore" - Refinery29

Posted: 20 Jun 2019 11:20 AM PDT

But while the brown lip that was so popular in the '90s is doing a boomerang, it's rare you'll catch Blige herself in the dark lipstick she wore so often in the beginning of her career. "On the What's the 411? album, I was hiding. You couldn't see my eyes, and I had a hat on. I always wanted to wear dark lipstick or anything that hid me — glasses, a hood, whatever it was. I never believed in my own beauty," she tells Refinery29 in an interview. "Black lipstick was armor for me. Every time you'd see me, I had a lot of stuff on because I was hiding. I'm not hiding anymore."

Black Americans are missing from Adidas's leadership ranks - Quartz

Posted: 19 Jun 2019 12:23 PM PDT

At Adidas's North American headquarters, less than 5% of the employees are black, according to internal company figures revealed in a New York Times report (paywall). In real numbers, that equates to fewer than 75 people out of nearly 1,700 employees at the company's Portland, Oregon campus.

The situation appears even more stark within the ranks of Adidas's global vice presidents. Two people familiar with the figures told the Times that last year only three of approximately 340 people in that role—about 1% of the total—were black. "One of the black executives, a female head of operations, has since departed," the Times noted.

As the Times points out, Adidas's North American employee demographics contrast sharply with its public image, which has leaned on black Americans for decades. The discrepancy reiterates how significant the gap can be between a company's outward face and the makeup of its actual corporate leadership.

The problem is hardly Adidas's alone. At Nike, which publishes its diversity numbers, about 8% of company vice presidents and fewer than 5% of directors are black. Nike has also been called out (paywall) for promoting women in its marketing materials while using contracts for female runners that effectively penalized them for getting pregnant. (Nike has said it will change its contracts.) The fashion industry overall, which makes much of its profits by selling to women, has surprisingly few female CEOs, and numerous companies fall short when it comes to diversity in their corporate leadership.

At Adidas, the contrast may feel especially pronounced because the company, though founded and based in Germany, owes a good deal of its image to black Americans. It signed the rap world's first million-dollar endorsement deal with Run DMC in 1986, and some of its most prominent brand ambassadors today include musicians Kanye West, Pharrell Williams, and Beyoncé, as well as basketball players James Harden, Kyle Lowry, and Damian Lillard.

Many of the sales associates representing Adidas to shoppers in its US retail stores are black. An Adidas spokesperson told the Times that 55% of all its employees in the US, including people paid an hourly wage in retail stores, are people of color.

Not least of all, black Americans are also important customers. North America is one of Adidas's biggest markets, representing more than 20% (pdf) of its sales last year.

Black employees in Portland who spoke to the Times said they sometimes felt overlooked or discriminated against. Adidas's president of North America reportedly acknowledged to employees that the company needed to improve diversity in its corporate office, the Times reported.

But in a later staff meeting, he also reportedly said that Adidas's Portland office reflected the local population. The company first moved its US headquarters to Portland, where Nike was founded, in 1993 (paywall). The city is currently more than 70% white and just under 6% black, in part because of its history of keeping out minority groups.

Adidas's Portland office.

"We are committed to fostering a respectful, equitable, and inclusive environment for all Adidas employees around the world," the company said in a statement to Quartz. "It's crucial that we have and support a diverse workforce that represents a variety of ideas, strengths, interests and backgrounds and that we promote an open culture where all of our people can fully contribute. We value all of our employees, are stronger because of their unique perspectives, and are dedicated to achieving greater diversity at every level of the company."

The company added that it is actively strengthening its policies and programs to make sure it's recruiting and retaining a diverse staff. Adidas said it had recently expanded a diversity and inclusion team in North America, and it has a strategy in place to bring people from different backgrounds to the company's corporate headquarters. "While we have made progress in these areas, we recognize there is much more to be done, and we are committed to doing it," Adidas said.

In its 2018 annual report (pdf), Adidas described diversity as critical to its success, saying it allows the company to better meet the needs of a wide range of global customers. It boasted that there are employees from more than 100 nations working at the company's headquarters in Herzogenaurach, Germany, and said failure to create a culture that fosters diversity and inclusion could even impede its ability to achieve its business goals.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Announces Special Makeup Collection - Comicbook.com

Posted: 20 Jun 2019 10:07 AM PDT

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure isn't afraid to find the spectacular sides of their characters. With the main character of the current season, Giorno Giovanna, wearing a bright pinks outfit with a giant heart outline on his chest, its no surprise to see that a company would go ahead and bring a make-up line to the forefront celebrating the series.

Twitter User AitaKuji dropped the news that the company, Ichiban Kuji, will be releasing this "bizarre" line of lipsticks, blushes, and other affects:

The current season of Jojo follows Giorno as he attempts to overtake the Italian mob, Passione, and point it in a more altruistic direction. The son of series villain Dio Brando, Giovanna has a "Stand" of his own called "Golden Wind" that has the ability to unleash a torrent of punches, as well as giving inanimate objects life. As the series edges toward its conclusion, Giorno and his friends are faced with the seemingly unbeatable opponent in the mob's leader, Diavolo.

Characters in Jojo's Bizarre Adventure sport fashion and general appearances the likes of which we've never seen before in any other anime or manga. Sometimes looking barely human, the heroes and villains wear insane hairstyles, wear other worldly clothing, and generally seem more garish and strange than their alien like "Stands" that appear out of thin air. If you want to look like a JoJo character in real life, picking up this make-up line certainly wouldn't be the worst idea!

What do you think of this JoJo's Bizarre Adventure line of make-up? What's been your favorite season/generation of the series so far? Feel free to let us know in the comments or hit me up directly on Twitter @EVComedy to talk all things comics, anime, and Muda Muda!

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind is the fifth part of Hirohiko Araki's series, and follows Giorno Giovanna, the son of former series villain Dio Brando, as he joins the mafia group Passione in order to change and reform them into reputable thieves and crooks from the inside. The anime adaptation premiered last October, and can be currently found streaming on Crunchyroll.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure was originally created by Hirohiko Araki for Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump in 1987. Currently the second longest running series in the magazine with over 100 volumes collected, the series tells the story of the Joestar family, who are each entwined in a destiny battling outrageous foes. The series has been split up into eight parts, with each part following a different generation of the Joestar family.

Power Star, Naturi Naughton, reveals the most shocking reason behind why she will miss playing her character "Tasha".

Naturi Naughton, who plays the character "Tasha" from 50 Cent's executively produced series Power, has revealed what she will miss most about filming.

After 50 Cent announced season 6 will be the last of the series, many of the cast have shared how they feel after finishing after six strong seasons.

While other cast members will miss the closeness of the cast mates on-set and the drama itself, actress Naturi Naughton who stars Tasha St. Patrick will miss her lovely modernised penthouse.

Naturi told Page Six that "the sets are going to be destroyed" said the Power actress.

She continued: "[I've] got to take something from [my character Tasha's] penthouse — something from her closet, something from the living room. I [would] take the whole kitchen if I could."

After joking about, Naturi revealed that she'll seriously probably grab "something from Tasha's makeup kit" as a keepsake, of course.

The final season of Power will premiere at Madison Square Garden (Aug 20th), with a performance by 50 Cent himself and stars Omari Hardwick, Rotimi, Naturi Naughton, La La Anthony, Joseph Sikora and more.
