Sassafrass Gifts in Brighton is closing - Livingston Daily Posted: 03 Jul 2019 04:30 AM PDT After eight years, Brighton store Sassafrass Gifts is closing its doors. The business owner, Cathy Dedakis, said she's decided to retire from the gift shop in order to spend more time with her grandchildren, to split her time between Michigan and Tennessee, and to focus on her bridal show business in Brighton called Here Come The Brides Bridal Show. The store, located at 108 W. Main St., could possibly close at the end of July or early August, Dedakis said. "I do want people who reside and shop in the city of Brighton to know that this is a happy ending," Dedakis said. "This gift store made it. So many times, small business do not, and I am hoping to inspire any other person looking to go into business, that, yes, it can happen for them. It happened for me." She had always planned to close the store if it was open for eight years, she said. "The plan was always eight years and out," Dedakis said. "But now that it has come, I am emotional because of all the friendships that I have made. I will greatly miss the banter that goes back and forth in our store between all of us." Dedakis opened the story in 2011 with Annette Jacoby, who left the partnership about two years ago, Dedakis said. She said the store could remain open if she finds a new owner suitable to take it over. "I have had interest so there's a possibility it could stay open," she said. A sale is ongoing until the store closes. Contact Livingston Daily reporter Sean Bradley at 517-552-2860 or at spbradley@livingstondaily.com. Follow him on Twitter @SbradleyLD. Brother and sister lose 39 STONE in just 12 months - but their workouts are insane - Mirror Online Posted: 03 Jul 2019 03:33 AM PDT A brother and sister have shed a massive 39 stone between them in just 12 months - but with VERY intense workouts. Just last summer, Bernie Holt, from Birmingham, was a huge 35 stone. Meanwhile her brother, Matthew, tipped the scales at 27 stone. But when he joined a gym and the weight started dropping off, it was the motivation Bernie needed to join him. The siblings started exercising together, getting up at 4am every morning to hit the gym - and each does four hours of exercise a DAY. Teaching assistant Bernie said: "When I finished school for the summer holidays in the July I really wanted to see what I could do in those weeks so I just said to him, 'I've got six weeks off, you need to help me' and he did. "We started going together, and he'd encourage me, he was my biggest inspiration from day one. "At first, I didn't know what exercises to do, it was just trial and error to see what worked. "I was so big it was hard to do any exercise at all, so I really had to start off small and steady. "I walked for five minutes on a treadmill and it absolutely killed me, I was exhausted. "But I've built it up – I've always said it doesn't get easier, you just get better at it – and now I can run on an incline for at least 45 minutes straight. "I love working with the personal trainers and doing weights has helped tone up excess skin after the weight loss." The weight started droping and by the time Bernie returned to school in September she had already lost five stone and the pupils didn't recognise her. She said: "One mum came up to me on the second day back and said how upset her daughter had been because she had a different teacher since she'd moved up to Year 1. "She'd told her 'Miss Holt's not there anymore'. I had to explain it was still me, I'd just changed quite a bit." Now, less than 12 months on she has lost an incredible 25 stone, down to just under 11, while Matthew is now just 13.5 stones. Bernie said: "I'm like a totally different person. Before, I didn't do any exercise and everything was dominated by my weight but now there's no restrictions on what I can do and I live in the gym. "I'm there from 4am most mornings to do a couple of hours' exercise before school and then I do another couple afterwards and I walk the dog twice a day too so I'm doing at least four or five hours a day, every day, seven days a week." Bernie has dropped from a tight-fitting size 32 to a size 10 but she admits weight has always been a family issue. She said: Everyone told me from when I was really young that I had the Holt gene because people on my dad's side are always big. My nan was about 50 stone, she wore size 14 shoes and was about 6ft2in. "I started putting on weight when I was about five and by the time I got to secondary school I was much bigger than all the other kids. "The weight just kept coming on, and when I was about 17 – if not before – I stopped being able to shop in regular shops. "I was actually quite popular at school but I didn't have the same social life as everyone else and I was always very conscious of my size even just walking in the street. "I always thought people were looking at me because I was so big, and there was a point where I wouldn't even go to the shops on my own. "I'd ask my mum to come with me, even if I was only going around the corner, because I hated it so much." As well as exercising for four hours a day, Bernie has also stopped eating sweet treats, bread and fizzy drinks. She has also cut out all carbs and eats just 1,000. Bernie said: "I am going to introduce good carbs and increase my calories to about 1,500 while I'm maintaining but most of the food I used to eat, even the smell of it, makes me feel ill now. "I don't obsess about food because I don't have to – if I want something I eat it because I know I'll burn it off." Bernie and her 30-year-old builder brother still text each other every morning before they get to the gym, to make sure they both stay on track, and they encourage each other to not give up. Bernie said: "I didn't have the right mindset to lose the weight before, I needed to wait until I was ready to do it for myself. "My target was a size 14, to fit into a jacket of my mum's that I loved, but now I'm a size 10 from a 32. "My Christmas jumper from work last year was too tight – now three of us can fit in it and it's loose." |
Posted: 03 Jul 2019 05:26 AM PDT When Louisville's 17th annual Forecastle Festival takes over Waterfront Park for three days this month, more than 50 acts will take to the stage. That means some painful choices. Pick a favorite or check out an unknown? Hip-hop or country? Mast, Boom or Ocean stage? What about the buzzy bands you might not have heard about? This year, headliners include The Killers, The Avett Brothers and Anderson .Paak & The Free Nationals. But there's also Portugal. The Man, Maggie Rogers, Tyler Childers, Judah & The Lion, Nelly, Chvrches, Moon Taxi, First Aid Kit and Dawes. And dozens more. To help, the Courier Journal asked a handful of those in the know about Louisville's music scene — including a DJ, current and former record-store owners, the music editor of the city's weekly, a concert promoter and musicians — for their top don't-miss picks of both headliners and undercards. Forecastle for free: Here's how you can get into the festival without paying a cent Here are their picks in their own words: Jack HarlowMusician, Louisville native
Pro Tip: Everyone needs to hit a festival after-party ... specifically The Homies x Private Garden after-party at Bourbon Hall, 116 W. Jefferson St., on Friday, July 12. Lineup: Forecastle Festival's 2019 lineup includes The Killers, Anderson .Paak Billy HardisonPartner & Talent Buyer for Production Simple & Headliners Music Hall
Pro-Tip: I'm talking to myself here. Avoid creeping FOMO. You can't be everywhere at once. It's better to see one whole set than parts of two. Don't treat your fest experience like you're channel-surfing. See also: Forecastle Festival's 2019 Late-Night shows include Chromeo and Moon Taxi John TimmonsWFPK DJ and owner of the former ear-X-tasy music shop
The Local Contingent:
Pro-Tip: Stay hydrated, find shade whenever possible and leave the glitter at home. ICYMI: A new music festival from Forecastle producers is heading to Keeneland Laura ShineWFPK DJ
Pro Tip: Treat yourself to a Popsicle, no matter the cost. Check out: Here's your ultimate 2019 guide for free outdoor music in Louisville Scott ReckerLEO Weekly music editor
Pro Tip: Find some air conditioning. The beauty of Forecastle's location is its proximity to Main Street. The festival isn't held in some dusty field in the middle of nowhere — it's a five-minute walk to bars and restaurants. Every year, I find weak spots in the lineup, ideally in the late afternoon, and I walk up to Against The Grain, 401 E. Main St., or Bluegrass Brewing Company, 300 W. Main St., and get something to eat and a beer. It saves you some money and a sunburn. And, the air conditioning is rejuvenating after getting pummeled by hours of humidity. Pro Tip: Stand your ground! Some festivalgoers are ruthless. If there is an artist you can't miss, be sure to be in the audience for the show before. Remembering Nic Manikis and his corner shop, Queanbeyan community legends - About Regional Posted: 02 Jul 2019 07:00 PM PDT "You can't sell the shop, Nic. Everyone will miss you," says a voice filming Nic Manikis as he loads milk into a fridge at his convenience store on Morton St in Queanbeyan. It's one of the last videos of Nic before he died, peacefully in his shop on June 12, some 44 years after he first started in 1975. His afterglow shone bright on the shop's last day of trading, June 15, when the Manikis family opened Nic's Convenience Store one more time. It was also Nic's 68th birthday and the people of Queanbeyan stood outside the shop in droves. Estimates had the numbers at close to 1000 people. More than 500 lolly bags were handed out to people of all ages to celebrate the fact that Nic truly was a man of the people. The NSW Deputy Premier and Member for Monaro, John Barilaro, even made a speech in Parliament on 20 June. "If the measure of someone is how they make you feel, the outpouring of grief from the local community reflects this deep loss and end of an era," Mr Barilaro said. Weekly NewsletterWe package up the most-read About Regional stories of the past week and send direct to your inbox every Tuesday afternoon. Subscribing is the easiest way to keep up, in one hit. "The Manikis family know that it isn't just their hearts that are broken, but also the hearts of the Queanbeyan community." Nic quite often handed out lollies freely to his customers. His daughter Kerry Weiss said that when her father was growing up in a small Greek village, he rarely got to have a lolly. "Through the shop, Dad had the opportunity to make children feel that every day was a special day, which is why when they visited the shop, he gave them a lolly. "Dad was a kind and generous man and wore his big heart on his sleeve." Above all else, Nic was a family man and Kerry said once the shop was sold, their first family holiday together in decades had been planned. Airfares to visit Nic's son George in Melbourne had been booked. Kerry and her brother Chris are both realistic about what will happen to the shop, one of the last true 'corner stores', even though it was right in the middle of Morton Street. "It's definitely hard to see what will happen to the shop. It has lots of potential," says Chris. "It was an amazing security blanket, we always knew where dad was." Former Queanbeyan resident Belinda McMillan used to live in Agnes Ave and had known Nic since she was six years old. She wouldn't be surprised if the community was more than a bit protective of what happens to the shop. "Our family saw four generations with that shop. It will be hard to think of it as anything but Nic's shop," Belinda says. Sarah Willis is another former Queanbeyan resident who credits Nic with being so much more than a friendly shopkeeper. "His empathy and wisdom brought me back to life after my marriage ended," says Sarah. "His shop really was the last of the true corner stores and I can't believe Nic isn't going to be there anymore. "I would turn the place into a tribute to Nic – a little coffee place that is warm and welcoming where people could sit and have a chat – Nic's Cafe of course." The community has a fund taking donations for a memorial bench in Apex Park. Those plans are already morphing into a picnic table. Suggestions have also been put to the family to name the future park where the basketball courts are on Ross Road, after Nic. "My dad was an amazing father and it's heartwarming to feel the support of our community as we process the shock of dad's sudden death," said George Manikis. "Our family is happy for the shop to be transformed to start its next chapter in the community," Kerry Weiss says. "The reason the property is for sale is that it was to fund mum and dad's retirement and we've got to look after mum now. We know the community will support that. "We just have so much gratitude and thanks for all the wonderful tributes we've received." As one more passer-by stops to offer his condolences and share his 'Nic story', he asks how Nic died. He is told Nic died unexpectedly from a heart-related issue which shocked the family as Nic had no known health issues and was recently given a clean bill of health. Perhaps, his heart was just too big. Original Article published by Michael Weaver on The RiotACT. |
Posted: 03 Jul 2019 11:22 AM PDT If you search "Antonio Gonzalez" on the movie information website imdb.com, odds are that you may see a familiar face. Before he became the new Lower Swatara Township Police Department detective, Antonio Gonzalez Jr. was an actor and a card-carrying member of the Screen Actors Guild, appearing in music videos and movies such as "Fighting" alongside Channing Tatum. Gonzalez has been with the department since May 2018, and was appointed as detective on June 1, replacing Ryan Gartland, who resigned in January. "It helps a lot because I'm able to think outside of the box. Being in IT, you have to think outside of the box, and being a detective, you definitely have to think outside of the box," Gonzalez said of his acting experience. Gonzalez received his bachelor's degree in cyber/computer forensics and counterterrorism from Hodges University in Naples, Florida, while he was an officer with the St. Petersburg Police Department. He was recognized by the commissioners during their June 5 meeting. "It takes a special police officer [to be a detective]. Somebody with a really good personality. Somebody that's professional. Somebody that maintains that professionalism on duty, off duty, wherever they may be in the eye of public, and this is what Tony does," said Police Chief Jeff Vargo during the meeting. Gonzalez grew up in the Bronx, and was 18 when he began acting after a woman stopped him on the street in New York City and said he looked like he would be a good actor. He had acted in school productions of "Little Shop of Horrors" and "West Side Story," but this was the start of his work as an extra. His first movie was Ross Katz's "Taking Chance" in 2009 starring Kevin Bacon, who portrayed a volunteer military escort officer taking the body of a Marine home to Wyoming. He was an extra in an airport scene where Bacon was trying to go through a metal detector. He's appeared in other movies and shows such as "Gossip Girls" and "You Don't Mess with the Zohan" and Aventura's music video for "El Malo." Every time an actor is in camera view, they receive a SAG waiver, and according to Gonzalez, once an actor receives three waivers, they become eligible to be a SAG member. One day, Gonzalez showed up to be an extra for "Fighting." Before extras appear on screen, they visit the wardrobe department to make sure they're wearing the right colors or if they need make up. One of the wardrobe specialists called him over. At first Gonzalez thought he did something wrong, but the specialist said he liked his look. In fact, production liked his look so much that they asked him to steal a suitcase in Times Square after asking for directions. It was his favorite role. "It was just so surreal, the feeling. I'm in the middle of Times Square with this microphone on me, and for the first time having a speaking role. I was just really excited. I felt really important," Gonzalez said. Gonzalez had more stories about his acting career — the lead singer of Aventura telling him they looked similar enough to be siblings and break dancing against actor Luis Guzmán's son at a release party. His family encouraged him to have a stable job, and work as an actor could be hit or miss. His parents thought he would be a police officer when he grew up — one of his first words was "coppy," referring to a cop. Some of the kids in his neighborhood didn't have the best relationship with police. "A lot of kids in my neighborhood used to always get stopped by cops all the time. It's just how it was in the neighborhood," he said. Gonzalez knew the other side — how it felt to be stopped because he happened to be wearing a red shirt, which was the color of the Bloods gang, and asked if he was a gang member. "To me that's wrong," he said. He was afraid of cops growing up, hearing horror stories from friends about police planting drugs. Gonzalez wanted to be a different type of police officer. "I always felt that I wanted to be different and interact more. Instead of having kids feel [like] they were harassed, I wanted them to feel [like] they were involved," he said. His acting career was put on hold in part because some law enforcement departments don't like their officers having other jobs. But his acting career helped him when he became a corrections officer in 2011 because the inmates recognized him from Aventura, which made them respect him and see him as a friend. For one year, he worked as a corrections officer on Rikers Island, which is located in the East River between Queens and the Bronx and is home to 10 jails. The hours were long. Gonzalez said there were cuttings, and people tried to hang themselves. People used to tell him he would be a great police officer, so that's what he did. He worked as an officer with Prince George's County Police Department in Maryland and Mount Vernon Police Department in New York. But Gonzalez found himself looking for a new job after he got injured while going through the police academy again for his job at Mount Vernon. He looked for a department where he wouldn't have to go through the academy again, and ended up in St. Petersburg, Florida. While Gonzalez was in Florida, his grandmother died. Family being important to him, Gonzalez decided to move closer to home. He learned that Pennsylvania had a test that allowed out-of-state officers to become certified depending on one's level of police training, which he passed. "All I really knew about Pennsylvania was Philadelphia, and the capital of Pennsylvania, which was Harrisburg," he said. He was hired as a township officer in May 2018. Crime in Lower Swatara is lower than where he had been in New York and Florida, but Gonzalez figured that it would be a better place to raise a family. For the past several months, he was assigned to the detective division as part of a career development program. "We wanted to tap into his area of expertise. … He's a people person. He's a very thorough investigator, we've quickly learned. Very intelligent, very caring, possesses a lot of qualities that we look for in an investigator," Vargo said in an interview. Vargo said one of Gonzalez's primary roles will be investigating electronic crimes. He will also help run the department's social media accounts and serve as one of the public information officers along with Officer Jason Heckendorn. As Gonzalez, whose bachelor's degree is in cyber/computer forensics and counterterrorism, sees it, crime has become and will be more electronics-based. His skills are already paying off. One of his recent cases involved a township resident who had a nearly $500 fraudulent charge on his debit card, originating from South Carolina. Gonzalez was able to pull video surveillance, and discovered that the person who made the charge was a truck driver from Miami. He ended up passing the case off to Miami police. "I love using technology to be able to solve these crimes," he said. Vargo noticed these qualities almost immediately, and thinks he has a lot of potential. "I'm confident that he will be an asset not only to the police department, but to the community in general," Vargo said. |
Here's How To Stream BTS' 5th Muster So You Don't Miss A Single Moment - Elite Daily Posted: 13 Jun 2019 12:00 AM PDT June is the month of BTS. There, I said it. Why, you ask? June 13 marks six years of the group being together. To celebrate the special anniversary, BTS holds their annual FESTA event for the two weeks leading up to the date. As per FESTA tradition, the guys shared special content for their fans like a dance practice video of "Mic Drop," Jin's solo song "Tonight," and a GoPro video of BTS performing "Anpanman" live in concert. With FESTA coming to a close in just over a week, BTS has moved on to another special event: their 5th Muster. In case "Muster" is an unfamiliar word to you, it basically means "a formal gathering of troops," aka BTS' fans — the ARMY (get it?). The Muster events are really special shows held by BTS for their fans, so you definitely can't miss it this year. If you're wondering how to stream BTS' 5th Muster, no worries, because it's actually really simple. This year, BTS' 5th Muster will be centered around the theme of "Magic Shop." The event shares a title with BTS' song of the same name off of their album, Love Yourself: Tear", released in May 2018. The guys performed their song "Magic Shop" throughout 2018 on their Love Yourself tour, and it has become a fan-favorite because of the line, "So show me, I'll show you," which BTS and their ARMY sang as a call and response whenever BTS performed it. Unfortunately, the guys didn't include the song on their set list for their Love Yourself: Speak Yourself tour this year, but here's hoping BTS will perform it at their 5th Muster. I mean, you can't have the theme be "Magic Shop" without including the song, right? BTS has been teasing their 5th Muster since March 28, so you can imagine how excited fans are to finally experience the show. Part 1 of the 5th Muster will happen on June 15 and 16 in Busan, South Korea at the Busan Asiad Auxiliary Stadium, while Part 2 will be on June 22 and 23 in Seoul at the Olympic Gymnastics Arena. Similar to BTS' Love Yourself: Speak Yourself concert at Wembley Stadium, which was streamed live through VLIVE, the group's 5th Muster will also be streamed on both the VLIVE website and app. On May 7, the official VLIVE Twitter account announced that although there are four shows for the 5th Muster, only the final show on Sunday, June 23 in Seoul will be streamed live. The event will happen at 7 p.m. KST, which is 6 a.m. EST and 3 a.m PST stateside. I know, that's really early for international fans, but that's just what happens when you stan a K-Pop group right? Since BTS' 5th Muster is considered exclusive content on VLIVE, fans will have to purchase the event in order to stream it. The 5th Muster costs 1000 VLIVE coins, which is about $18. You can purchase access to the stream by heading over the the VLIVE website. The stream for the 5th Muster will be extra special since VLIVE is offering fans a few different ways to watch the event. Apart from the main cam (main view), the app will also give fans the opportunity to watch the show from different angles. After the live show, the app will then upload the 5th Muster at a later date so fans can replay it as many times as they want. Here's what VLIVE said about the 5th Muster stream:
With that info, no wonder why fans are so hyped for the 5th Muster! It will truly be a once-in-a-lifetime performance. |
