Owasso teen nabs top honors at National Miss Amazing 2019 pageant - Tulsa World

An Owasso teen recently returned from National Miss Amazing 2019 with top honors.

Lindsey Spoon traveled to Chicago, Illinois, at the beginning of August to participate in the annual pageant, which provides a platform for girls and women with disabilities to build confidence and self-esteem.

Spoon, who was crowned Oklahoma Miss Amazing Teen Queen in March, received a Gold Service Award for her volunteer work with Owasso Community Resources as well as 1st Runner Up for National Miss Amazing Teen Queen.

The 19-year-old Owasso resident has a heart to serve, and in doing so has dedicated much of her time giving back to local families in need at the area nonprofit.

"OCR is an amazing organization that helps those in our local communities who are food insecure," Spoon said. "I am proud to serve with them."

Spoon's platform, "Human Development Education for EVERY Student," has also led her to work with Oklahoma Self Advocacy Network and Oklahoma People First to write and develop curriculum for the state of Oklahoma for students with disabilities.

"In my state, most often, students with disabilities are automatically opted out of having any human development classes," she said. "Every student, regardless of disability, can learn to protect themselves and have a good understanding of human development."

Spoon also attends advocacy workshops and recently graduated from Partners in Policymaking through the Oklahoma Developmental Disabilities Council. She served on staff at the Youth Leadership Forum and worked with a group of high school students on their advocacy journey.

"Thank you so much for believing in me and giving me the chance to share my passions at a national level," Spoon said of the Owasso community. "I can't wait to see where this journey takes me next!"

Spoon enjoys reading, makeup and working on her YouTube channel in her spare time. Her goals are to attend college and write a proposal to implement a page program at the Capitol for those with disabilities.

Dermstore’s 20th Anniversary Sale Happening Now — Shop 25 Percent Off Skin-Care Products - Allure Magazine

Posted: 16 Aug 2019 08:33 AM PDT

When a beauty retailer has an inventory as vast as Dermstore's, its sales become a truly huge deal. So brace yourself for Dermstore's 20th Anniversary Event, an opportunity to save up to 25% on the site's top skin-care, makeup, and hair-care brands.

The fun kicks off on Saturday, August 17, and won't come to a close until August 26, so you'll have just over a week to stock up on Sunday Riley, Paula's Choice, Harry Josh Pro Tools, and R+Co. All you have to do to take advantage is use code CELEBRATE at checkout, and just like that, you'll be saving loads as part of this anniversary celebration.

The only minor catch is that not every single Dermstore brand qualifies for the sale, but the silver lining is that the site's sparkling new rebrand makes it super easy to tell which products are included and which aren't. But even if you do fall in love with a non-discounted item, lucky members of the Dermstore Rewards program can earn double points on full-price brands, so it's truly a win-win.

With the sale rapidly approaching, all that's left to do now is pick out your favorite items so that your cart is filled to the brim with savings. Still need a bit of inspiration? Naturally, we have your back with a list of all the can't-miss products we'll be scooping up ourselves.

All products featured on Allure are independently selected by our editors. However, when you buy something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

If you've ever been scolded by your dermatologist for over-exfoliating, Dermalogica's Daily Microfoliant is the product for you. With the addition of water, the superfine powder transforms into a textured paste that softly polishes away dirt, grime, and dead skin cells with salicylic acid before delivering a dose of soothing colloidal oatmeal and oil-zapping green tea for a cleanse that's gentle enough even for sensitive skin. No wonder Allure readers honored the multitasking treatment with a coveted Readers' Choice Award earlier this year.

2019 Miss Korea: beauty inside and out [VIDEO] - Korea Times

Massively voluminous hair and genuine smiles ― beauty queens are often known for their aesthetically pleasing appearances more than any other traits. However, 2019 Miss Korea talks about what she believes is the most important aspect ― inner beauty.

The 2019 Miss Korea Kim Sae-yeon is the first winner to have won a regional competition abroad. Having grown up in the United States since she was eight years old, she was crowned 2019 Miss Korea USA and then 2019 Miss Korea.

During an interview with The Korea Times at the K-Art Studio, Kim talked about her journey to the pageant.

"One year ago, today, I would never have thought that I would be here as a 2019 Miss Korea," she said. "I saw my sister run for Miss Korea USA last year … I saw how much she grew and positively changed throughout her experience, which inspired me to run for Miss Korea this year."

Rather than seeking the title and fame, she said she was most interested in the experience. Asked what she expected during her year-long reign, she answered, "I don't expect too much, just a lot of experience to grow as a person. I've heard what former Miss Koreas have done for the community and I would also like to participate in community service."

She said that because her goal was to enjoy and learn from each moment, she believed people would find her true self more beautiful than just being a stand out among the candidates."What I value the most is inner beauty," she said. "It is not just about the appearance, but instead, it's the value and the character. Of course, looks are included, but it is also the personality, intelligence and confidence that make a person beautiful."Speaking about the training camp Miss Korea candidates attended for a month, Kim added, "There is no way to show inner beauty, even in front of the judges, in [such] a short span of time like six to 10 minutes. I think it is a month training process to see who we are, more than training us how to do our hair."During the training camp, candidates have yoga, hair and makeup, walking and modeling lessons.

Kim remembered the dreamy crowning moments as totally unexpected. "I didn't know what to feel," she said. "I just felt grateful to my family and friends, and everyone who supported me along the way, who granted me the opportunity to be up there [on stage]." Her family had flown from Los Angeles to cheer for her.

As the incumbent Miss Korea, Kim wants to give inspiration and hope to future Miss Korea candidates.
"Because I am the first regional Miss Korea abroad, I want to say that nothing is impossible," she said. "I [also] didn't think that I was going to make it because I am Miss Korea USA," she said. "Height doesn't matter too much anymore or even the body. I am not too skinny by Korean standards, but I was able to get that, too."

She said that against the stereotypes, Miss Koreas had their own unique character and personality. Rather than a competition of beauties, the pageant also looked into a person's intelligence and kind-heartedness. "You have to be smart and intelligent," she said. "And you have to be nice and live a kind life with the right kind of thoughts. It is more of a competition where everybody can come and try."

Cosmetics giant L'Oreal says sluggish US makeup market has hit sales - CNBC

Posted: 31 Jul 2019 12:00 AM PDT

L'Oreal, one of the world's largest cosmetics companies, missed estimates for its second-quarter sales growth citing weakness in U.S. demand.

Chairman and Chief Executive Jean-Paul Agon told CNBC Wednesday that the trading environment was "never steady" in the U.S. and that the makeup industry was vulnerable to the country's economic cycles.

"We started from scratch in the U.S. 50 years ago, we are now number one and it has never been a walk in the park. So some years are better than others. This year is a bit tough, we acknowledge that," he told CNBC's Julianna Tatelbaum.

Consumer analysts have highlighted a boom in the U.S. makeup market in the last five years, with many celebrities launching their own successful brands, such as singer Rihanna's Fenty Beauty collection or Kylie Jenner's Kylie Cosmetics.

A raft of Instagram celebrities and bloggers promoting cosmetics and makeup tutorials has also led to a generation of millennials who are more confident with makeup products, styles and application than their parents' generation.

But Agon said Wednesday that "the makeup market has really slowed down in the U.S.," which suggests that recent boom may have peaked.

"We are by far the number one player in makeup, in consumer, but also we are pretty strong in luxury. So when the cycle is not good for makeup it's a headwind for us," he said.

Analysts also say there may be "fatigue" in the U.S. makeup market in the last 12 to 18 months, with some consumers looking at more niche or luxury makeup products, rather than mass-market offerings .

North American like-for-like revenues for L'Oreal — which strip out currency swings and acquisitions — fell 1.1% in the April to June period and were flat in the first half of 2019. The French cosmetics company is the latest European brand to point to wavering demand and shifting beauty trends in North America with Kering's Gucci also highlighting faltering U.S sales last week.

Asked how long this dynamic could last, Agon didn't believe it would be long, noting that "maybe the cupboards are a bit full with makeup and after a while people will go again and buy some makeup products."

Shares of L'Oreal were trading 4.5% lower Wednesday following the results.

Police suspend Amazon’s The Marvelous Miss Maisel promotion - The CEO Magazine

Posted: 15 Aug 2019 11:56 PM PDT

Amazon put on a 1959 price day to honour The Marvelous Miss Maisel's 20 Emmy Awards nominations and it proved too much of a hit in the rush hour traffic as roads became jammed for the 30 cents a gallon gas at a Chevron station.

By Ian Horswill

Posted on August 16, 2019

Amazon's awesome idea of recreating the prices for 1959 to match the setting of its acclaimed drama The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel backfired.

The Amazon promotion caused, surprise surprise, traffic chaos in California as drivers lining up to buy cheap gas lead to queues of busy roads.

Amazon teamed up with several businesses in the coastal city of Santa Monica for Maisel Day in honour of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel receiving 20 Emmy nominations. The business involved offered 1959 prices and the promotion went bersek of social media with the hashtag #MaiselDay.

Rachel Brosnan stars in Amazon's hit drama The Marvelous Mrs Maisel.

Some went for the 1959 prizes for sandwiches, milkshakes, coffees, haircuts, hotel rooms and movie tickets, but most wanted the big price – 30 cents per gallon gas at a Chevron station. The average price for a gallon of gas for the day was US$2.64.

The queues for the gas the petrol station were so great that it forced Santa Monica Police to suspend the The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel promotion.

The average price for a gallon of gas in the US today is US$2.641.

When the peak hour traffic ended, the Santa Monica Police allowed the Amazon promotion to go ahead after organising a more organised taffic flow into the gas station.

It's not the first time Amazon has offered 1950s-era pricing to promote The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. The company teamed up with the Carnegie Deli to offer discounted sandwiches in New York ahead of the season 2 premiere.

The 71st Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards will be on Sunday, September 15.
