Lip glosses, foundations, and mascaras that can stand the test of time (aka sunshine and sweat).

By: Jodi Taylor

While we're not the type to apply full contour faces of makeup throughout the summer, we do have a few tried-and-true products that we rely on to get that minimal, natural-looking glow. They're the products we can rely on to get us looking our best glow-y selves even after late nights of emails or, let's be real, patio cocktails. If you're looking for a new hero makeup product yourself, we highly suggest considering any, or all, of the below.

Monique Kamargo

Editorial Producer

1. Supergoop Shimmershade: I rarely wear eyeshadow, but lately I've been putting on this Supergoop Shimershade in Golden Hour almost every day. The main reason is because it's just so fun to apply! The creamy texture glides on so easily and adds just enough sparkle, nothing too heavy or dramatic. Did I mention it has SPF too?

2. Squish Beauty Jelly Lip Gloss: I'm obsessed with everything that is Squish Beauty. This jelly lip gloss is non-sticky and glides on super smooth. Not to mention the packaging is the cutest and a true accessory on its own.

3. Kat Von D Go Big or Go Home Volumizing Mascara: This Kat Von D mascara is the real deal. I like to keep my makeup routine pretty minimal and can always count on this mascara to help waken up my eyes in the morning. After that, I'm out the door.

Haley Walker

Editorial Fellow

1. Marc Jacobs Velvet Noir Volume Mascara: The first time I wore this mascara, my own mother asked me if my eyelashes were real.

2. Nars Lipstick in Morocco: I've heard that men are intimidated (even turned off) by a bold lip, which is exactly why I don't go outside without one. I've been a hardcore NARS lipstick junkie since my makeup-wearing debut, and Marsala is my perennial favorite.

3. Tarte Amazonian Clay Full Coverage Foundation SPF 15: Scarring, acne, and perpetual redness are my biggest skin insecurities, so I live in full-coverage foundation (I know, I know—it's a vicious cycle). Tarte's Amazonian Clay, contrary to what its name might suggest, is the only one I've tried that doesn't make me feel like I just took a nosedive into a plot of wet cement.

Jacquelyn Greenfield

Editorial Production Fellow

1. Glossier Lip Gloss in Clear: I've never been a fan of wearing lipstick, but I do like a little shine on my lips every now and then. This lip gloss adds just the right amount of shine over any lip balm I put on, without making my lips feel like there's a lot of product on them.

2. Fenty Beauty Pro Filt'r Instant Retouch Concealer: The Fenty Beauty line has never failed me, so when they released a concealer, I knew I had just found my holy grail product. I usually wear it by itself when I do a "no-makeup" makeup look to cover most of the hyperpigmentation on my face.

3. Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara: I first tried this mascara eight years ago, and it still reigns supreme to all I've tried since.

Noah Lehava

Director, Lifestyle and Talent

1. Giorgio Armani Beauty Luminous Silk Foundation: The extra vitamin D does wonders for my skin, so summertime means I can opt for a lighter-coverage foundation. This one has been a staple in my makeup bag for years because of how lightweight it is and how glowy it leaves my skin.

2. RMS Peach Luminizer: This is the holy grail, guys! I dab this on my cheeks, down the center of my nose, on the bow of my upper lip, and on my eyelids. It gives that golden-hour glow all day long.

3. Dior Lip Glow: To round out the glowy face, I love a sweep of Dior's Lip Glow. It subtly enhances my lip color and adds a juicy shine.

Mariah Contento

Editorial Intern

1. Tata Harper Volumizing Lip and Cheek Tint in Very Popular: My combination skin loves this creamy multi-use product. Not to mention their "Very Popular" shade goes so well with my olive skin tone. A little goes a long way—I'll blend it out on my cheeks and use the remainder on my lips. I'll double-dip if I'm feeling a bolder lip. The bonus is it's clean beauty and has anti-aging properties... Score!

2. RMS Beauty "Un" Cover-up Concealer: It's safe to say I've discovered my favorite product. The only concealer I've found that is friendly to my under-eyes and won't cause any creasing. The formula is super hydrating and very buildable. (Cue Rihanna) Where have you been all my life?

3. Glossier Lash Slick Mascara: My very first time using this mascara was life-changing. I found that the product performed exactly as it had claimed. My tiny lashes at the time (thank goodness for castor oil that has helped them grow) instantly appeared longer and didn't clump, even with a couple of layers. "Extensions without the extensions," they claim, and there's no other way I would put it.

1. Nude by Nature Sunshine Beach Glow Liquid Highlighter: Now that I understand the power of liquid highlighter (it's buildable, easy to use, and controllable), I'm certain that I will never use a powder highlighter ever again. I've tried all three shades of this Nude by Nature highlighter and found that the Sunshine color matched my skin tone the best. Let me tell you something: This highlighter does not budge unless you wash it off at night.

2. Tarte Park Avenue Princess Chisel Palette: I recently started using this palette (as in two weeks ago), and I'm already hooked. My skin tone fluctuates a bit in the summer based on how much sun I got that week (who can relate?), so it's helpful to have a range of shades to choose from. There's even a sparkle option if you're feeling a little daring.

3. Artis Elite Mirror Oval 6 Makeup Brush: I'm not one to put on makeup with my fingers (my skin is oily enough), so I swear by my Artis brush to apply my concealer smoothly. It helps control your coverage (tap the brush for full coverage, and use it in circular motions for minimal coverage), and if you mix in a bit of oil with your concealer or foundation, you'll be walking out of your house looking like you had your makeup professionally done.

Lucifer, my love: Twin Temple Vinyl Cosmetics unboxing and more - 1428 Elm

Posted: 17 Aug 2019 03:00 AM PDT

We are big fans of Twin Temple here at 1428 Elm and they have a collaboration with cosmetic company, Vinyl Cosmetics for a lipstick that's a gift from Hell.

Hello, hellish beauties. This is something a lot different than what I have done before but I promise it will make sense. I have covered a lot of Twin Temple news in the past and even reviewed their debut album. If you love Twin Temple, then you should definitely check out their collaboration with a company called Vinyl Cosmetics.

Twin Temple has paired up with Alicia Rau from Vinyl and its sister company, Bete Noire (unboxing coming soon) to make up one of the most comfortable and gorgeous red lipsticks called Lucifer. Check out the unboxing video below and keep reading for swatches.

A huge thank you to Alicia at Vinyl Cosmetics for sending me Lucifer as well as the other collaborations to unbox and try for you. Let's take a look at Twin Temple's Lucifer first.

Lucifer is a blue-based red which means it will make your teeth look brighter and whiter. Unfortunately, it turns slightly pink on olive skin tones like mine but with a little building, I was able to tone down the pink to have a more true red look. It's a classic red on the brighter side and this would be amazing with any retro look.

The formula is bananas. I literally put this on and couldn't get it completely off until the next day. I used my make up wipes and I still had enough color that I could easily go out and no one would notice. I even slept with it and none got on my pillow.

This lipstick definitely needs to be removed with an oil-based remover. But it is so comfortable. I was impressed. This lipstick runs for $22.

Next up we have the Vinyl Cosmetics collab with photographer, singer and alternative model, Beatriz Mariano. She is stunning and if you have seen any alternative brands, you have seen her face.

She is talented in all she does and she has created a beautiful orange-based brick-like red called Covenant. This is the same formula as Lucifer and the tone is better for warmer skin. I adore this color and it has landed itself in my daily makeup bag. This lipstick is $22.

This next lipstick is not a collaboration but a beautiful shade in their Thunder Kiss liquid lip line called Morticia. The doe-foot applicator on this one is a lot smaller and it is scented lightly with vanilla. The color looks different in different lights.

This is natural light and it took on an almost brownish-wine hue when in artificial light, it has more of a purple-based plum color. The formula is the same and this lipstick will run you $18.

I am not sure if this is a collaboration or if it is just the signature color of an alternative model named Death Candy. This is a jet black liquid lip. Most black liquid lipsticks I have ever gotten have such a gray or even GREEN tone to them, that they are never just black and the ones that are, are so splotchy and streaky that it takes a miracle to get it to look even. This, however, is super pigmented, dries down fast and is BLACK. This one costs $18 as well.

I have used liquid lipsticks from a lot of different companies and the Vinyl Cosmetics formula is my favorite so far. I don't have issues with streaking or flaking. If you eat or drink something remotely oily, you will lose color in what I have heard referred to as the "butthole" of your mouth, meaning your inner lip. That happens with pretty much every lipstick, so it is nothing of concern.

I was tremendously impressed with the quality of the Vinyl Cosmetics lipstick. They have so many amazing shades and they also have an eyeshadow palette as well. All of their lipsticks are matte, vegan and cruelty-free.

Thank you again to Alicia for sending me these. I cannot recommend these lipsticks enough and they are stunning. You can shop the whole collection HERE. If you aren't familiar with Twin Temple, check out our review of their album and their tour date with the band Ghost.

The Five Things I’m Buying During Dermstore’s Anniversary Sale - New York Magazine

Though Dermstore is a very easy-to-use website (it has this handy filtration system that lets you input your specific skin type and concerns), it can also be a very overwhelming website. In total, there are about 459 brands sold on Dermstore, many of which are some of my all-time favorites, like Skinceuticals and Dr. Dennis Gross. It's an embarrassment of riches — if you know where to look.

I stress that because things are about to become particularly overwhelming on the beauty site. Starting today through August 25, participating brands are up to 25% off. Since I consider it my duty to make sure you, my readers, only buy the very best things when you shop for your skin care, hair care, and beauty products, I hunted through the giant, rather daunting list of brands that'll be on sale, and put together a carefully curated list of products worth ordering during this precious weeklong window. A note: To get any the discounts, you must enter the code CELEBRATE at check-out.

Princess Eugenie's Makeup Artist Watched Me Put on My Makeup, and Boy, Did I Learn a Lot - POPSUGAR

Posted: 12 Aug 2019 12:00 AM PDT

One morning, as I was going through my usual makeup routine I started to really think about what I was doing: was I using the right moisturizer before my foundation? Was I applying concealer that made my fine lines look worse? Is there another way I can define my brows without painstakingly drawing on tiny hairlike strokes? It then occurred to me that maybe I should ask a professional rather than just hoping someday the answers would magically pop into my head. So that's exactly what I did.

This is the story of how I decided to seek the help of a professional makeup artist. But not just any makeup artist. I wanted the help of Hannah Martin, the the wedding makeup artist to Princess Eugenie.

One scroll through her Instagram and you'll see three things: glowing skin, minimal-but-beautiful eye makeup, and before-and-after photos that show the same person but just an enhanced version of themselves. Basically, it's everything I wanted from my own makeup. Add the fact that she's incredibly down to earth (you'll love her after listening to just one episode of her podcast with fellow makeup artist, Lisa Potter-Dixon, "Life and Lipstick"), and I knew she'd be the perfect person to give me kind and constructive criticism about my makeup.

Luckily, she was game. So on an average Wednesday morning, I apprehensively tipped out the contents of my makeup bag — a mix of high street and high-end products — for Martin to inspect while we sat together in a coffee shop just off Oxford Street. One by one, we discussed each product choice and application technique (many of which I was doing wrong), and she gave me advice on where I could improve. Keep reading to see all of the tips Hannah Martin gave me during an hour-long makeup lesson. Myself and my makeup bag will be forever thankful.

Francois Nars 25th Anniversary Interview | POPSUGAR Beauty UK - POPSUGAR UK

Posted: 16 Aug 2019 12:00 AM PDT

Before there was Orgasm Blush, or Laguna Bronzer, or The Multiple, there were 12 lipsticks in matte-black tubes that quietly appeared at the Barneys makeup counter in New York City.

The year was 1994, and François Nars was not the household name that he is today. He was a makeup artist working behind the scenes for fashion's biggest photographers, designers, and magazines, and who was bored with not only the heavy makeup aesthetic at the time, but also the limited makeup formulas and colour choices available to him. So the French-born makeup artist decided to shake things up and spontaneously launch his own line of lipsticks at Barneys. These were followed by The Multiple, a multi-use cream pigment stick that could be applied to eyes, cheeks, and lips that Nars whipped up on a photoshoot in 1996, and then the famous Orgasm Blush, which he developed three years later in 1999. After that, the rest is makeup history — literally, as it's a history that Nars had an integral role in shaping with his innovative formulas and exciting colour ranges (not to mention his boundary-pushing shade names) that appealed — and very much continue to appeal — to beauty professionals and consumers alike.

If you're good at math, then you've already realised that Nars Cosmetics is celebrating a big anniversary in 2019. For the rest of us who haven't opened a math book since university and still have nightmares about failing statistics (me): the brand is 25 years old this year and it's celebrating in a pretty epic way. This month, Nars relaunches those 12 original lipstick shades from 1994, as well as 60 additional hues — both of which feature an exciting new formula that's lighter, creamier, more moisturising, and longer lasting than before. You can currently buy the lipsticks on Nars' website, while the entire collection will be available in boutiques and Nars' other retailers starting September 1st.

The Original 12 Lipstick Collection — which include iconic red hues like Heat Wave and Jungle Red — are eye-catching, packaged in soft-touch, matte-red tubes embossed with "NARS" in white lettering, while The Iconic Lipstick Collection features an updated version of the brand's matte-black tubes that once housed their old Satin, Sheer, and Semi-Matte Lipstick ranges. And while the packaging and formula is new, as well as a bunch of the colours, you'll still be able to find some of the classic Nars hues amongst the 72-piece range — iconic shades like Schiap (a personal favourite), Dolce Vita, Fire Down Below, Pigalle, and Roman Holiday, to name a few.

As part of the celebrations, François Nars sat down to reflect over both his career as a makeup artist and beauty brand owner in a master Q&A that the brand shared exclusively with POPSUGAR. So sit back, keep reading, and when you're finished, you can click to shop the new anniversary collection — and look forward to another 25 years of cheeky shade names and makeup rule breaking.
