Pride pageant celebrates spreading love | Local News - Valdosta Daily Times

Posted: 20 Aug 2019 12:00 PM PDT

VALDOSTA – With an upcoming event, South Georgia Pride continues to spread the message that "love tears down walls."

The 2019 theme communicates the notion that love will overcome barriers and social issues, organizers said.

South Georgia Pride hosts its annual pageant 8 p.m.-1 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, at Holiday Inn Valdosta Conference Center, 1805 W. Hill Ave. Doors open 7 p.m.

"It's a pageant allowing local kings and queens to exhibit their talent," Christian Benoit, nonprofit executive director, said.

The winners will be the faces of South Georgia Pride and will promote the LGBT community, he said.

LGBT means lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender.

Categories include presentation, talent, evening gown/formal wear and question-and-answer.

Contestants are to focus on self-expression during the presentation segment, organizers said.

"I've attended quite a few pageants, and from experience, self-expression allows someone to be themselves and they tend to be more creative," Benoit said.

With a three-minute time limit for the category, competitors will introduce themselves to an audience and a panel of judges.

Organizers allow contestants to lip sync and/or model in costume. Contestants must provide their own music.

Judging is based on creativity, fit, ability to model costume, speaking ability and music selection. There is an overall score, as well.

While talent may encompass any range, organizers ask that excessive glitter, powder, fire or water not be used.

There is a seven-minute time limit for this category with a five-minute time limit for set-up and dismantling.

Judging for the talent portion is based on ability, entertainment value, costume and makeup, sound quality and prop/dancer effectiveness, organizers said.

Miss contestants will be judged in full-length evening gowns while Mister contestants will be judged in formal wear.

Points are based on gown/formal wear selection, fit, hair/makeup, accessories, poise, modeling ability and overall appearance.

Music is provided for this specific category, according to organizers.

The question-and-answer selections will concern the LGBT community.

The first-place Miss South Georgia Pride winner will receive a crown, sash, trophy, $300 in cash, inclusion in a VIP party and South Georgia Pride Festival Spectacular Showcase Drag Show and a room at the Holiday Inn.

The second-place winner will get $75 in cash and awards.

The prizes are the same for the Mr. South Georgia Pride winner.

Advanced registration is $50 and event day registration is $75. Event day registration is 4-7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24.

Entertainment includes the former king and queen, Aiijuan Dickerson, Tonya Marie Richardson, Leona Iman and Ronnie Rowdy. There will be a cash bar with a $10 cover fee.

Benoit said while the pageant is open to the general public, kids must be chaperoned by a parent.

Advanced admission tickets are $10 and door tickets are $15. Kids admission is free.

Pageant registration can be completed by visiting sgapride.com or the group's Facebook page. Call (706) 373-3002, or visit southgapride.com for more information.

Kim Kardashian West Goes Makeup Free For Date Night With Kanye - Yahoo Lifestyle

Just when bright shadow statements and punchy red pouts seem to have hit an all time high, leave it to Kim Kardashian West to switch up summer makeup. Her solution? Don&apost wear any at all.

The KKW Beauty founder and contour queen stepped out for dinner last night in Santa Monica with a foundation-free glow, complete with a grey sweatsuit and effortless waves. While the mother of four is known for her standout beauty looks, regularly posting a dramatic smoky eye for her 146 million followers, this latest look is a well-timed, welcomed refresh.

With August&aposs humidity index seemingly rising by the hour, we can&apost think of a better time to take a night or two off from some heavy concealer or powder. Kardashian isn&apost alone in going bare: just last week, singer Miley Cyrus revealed a fresh face on Twitter, opting for an au naturel complexion in place of her go-to crimson lip. With uncovered skin and accompanying insouciance, both women prove that sticking to that monthly facial regimen and slathering on a hard-working moisturizer every night is certainly worth it.

Burnley boss Sean Dyche explains the thinking behind the makeup of his subs bench - LancsLive

Posted: 19 Aug 2019 10:00 PM PDT

Burnley boss Sean Dyche insists all his squad will get opportunities this season after naming the same team for the opening two Premier League games of the season.

The Clarets again had three defenders on the bench for the 2-1 reverse to Arsenal, as they had done a week earlier against Southampton.

Matej Vydra has not yet featured in a matchday squad while deadline day signing Danny Drinkwater is in need of minutes before he makes a first team outing, having played 45 for the Under-23s on Monday.

Yet Dyche believes the current Clarets squad is so strong that the calibre of players missing out is going to be par for the course.

And the Burnley boss knows he faces a balancing act to keep those not involved happy.

He said: "We have such a competitive group now that I want to keep them all involved.

"I think the bench could change and it would be that you were not on the bench but could go straight into the team.

"There is that much competition now but that means some have to miss out, the idea is that we will get people back on the bench to keep them stimulated and keep them part of the group.

"We only have a smallish group so that is important to keep the mentality right."

Dyche introduced Jay Rodriguez and Aaron Lennon in the second half at the Emirates as Burnley chased a leveller with Jeff Hendrick the only other forward thinking option available.

Asked about having three defenders and a goalkeeper on the bench, Dyche said: "We choose accordingly, away from home not always, but generally you probably go slightly more defensive.

"At home you often go for more strikers, wide players and more production but we will plan it as we see fit for each game that comes."

Millie Bobby Brown Is Launching Her Own Beauty Brand For Gen Z - elle.com

Premiere Of Netflix's "Stranger Things" Season 3 - Arrivals

Matt WinkelmeyerGetty Images

It's been a week full of celebrity beauty brand announcements. Following in the footsteps of Kylie Jenner and Rihanna, Selena Gomez and Ciara have both claimed to be starting their own beauty brands, and we have another (very exciting) one to add to the mix.

She's the star of one of the most popular series to ever hit Netflix, but, despite being just 15 years old, Millie Bobby Brown is already branching out of Stranger Things territory. Yup, our Eleven is launching her own beauty brand. Just take our money now Millie.

Millie Bobby Brown Makeup Brand Florence Millie

Instagram

The new line is called Florence by Mills, inspired by her great grandmother. Brown told WWD that, 'I felt like a brand about individuality and bravery and being truthful should be named after somebody who was all of those things.'

Importantly, the brand will be PETA-certified, vegan AND cruelty-free. Well done Miss Brown.

So, what does a make-up brand for the Gen Z-ers look like you may ask? Whilst we don't have the full product list, it's clear that Brown is staying clear of Instagram's favourite full-coverage matte foundations and instead opting for subtle bases so Gen Z can show of that nice young skin of theirs.

Brown's favourite products from the range so far are her Light Skin Tint and Eye Gel pads. Being an actress at such a young age, Brown learned a few things about beauty in the process. 'I've been in a make-up chair since I was 10, 11 years old, and I have really been introduced to all types of products. I've had special effects on my face, blood, all different types of foundation...I wanted to come into the space because there was a gap in the market for young people.'

We're not sure of the exact UK details yet, but the pricing will range from between $10 (approx £8ish) and $34 (approx £28) and will be sold at your local Boots. The best part? A percentage of the proceeds from the beauty line will be donated to the Olivia Hope Foundation, founded in honour of Olivia Hope LoRusso, Brown's late friend. Beauty for a good cause.

Why evaluating QBs may be hardest job in sports: 'Like putting a jigsaw puzzle together' - Yahoo Entertainment

Posted: 20 Aug 2019 03:03 PM PDT

WESTLAKE, Calif. – The drafting and recruitment of quarterbacks remains the most unpredictable variable amid two billion-dollar industries that rely disproportionately on the productivity of that position.

The most important position in all of sports still somehow remains the most difficult to evaluate, as attempting to quantify how a quarterback processes information, reads defenses and works through his progressions resonates simultaneously as one of the game's most critical and difficult ventures. In the NFL and college football, there are millions poured annually into scouting, recruiting and attempting to decode football's final frontier.

"The makeup of the quarterback is such a rare and unique collection of factors," said longtime NFL executive Mike Tannenbaum, now a draft analyst for ESPN. "Processing is so important, and until [the quarterback is] under center and taking snaps, you really don't know."

For all that's tangible in quarterback evaluation – arm strength, athleticism and speed – there's so much that's difficult to ascertain.

Why were Tom Brady and Russell Wilson passed over by every NFL franchise before becoming Super Bowl champions? Why will Jake Locker, Geno Smith and JaMarcus Russell long be remembered as busts? Why did Mitch Mustain turn from a five-star to an afterthought while Andrew Luck soared to the top pick in the NFL draft?

Why is it so hard to identify quarterbacks who will excel at the highest levels of football? Because processing at the most important position in sports is a science that hasn't yet been mastered. (Yahoo Sports illustration)

Much comes down to the intangible and unquantifiable – processing seamlessly amid chaos, adjusting to defenses pre-snap and the ability to react and think under pressure. There are some scientific attempts to quantify the brain, reaction and instinct, but for now it remains one of the sport's great unknowns.

"Whoever figures out how to teach processing and can explain how they do that to everyone is going to be a rich man," said Will Hewlett, a Texas-based private quarterback tutor. "It's harder to put your finger on than physical traits, skills, even leadership qualities."

The unrefined process behind figuring out how well a quarterback processes information begins, in most cases, long before their senior year of high school. UCLA coach Chip Kelly has tried to crack the code of the quarterback's mind as both a college and NFL head coach.

In recruiting, he said the best way to evaluate the mind of the quarterback comes from an unofficial visit early in the prospect's career. There's a chicken-egg dynamic that makes this a tricky tightrope, as Kelly wants to sit down with a quarterback recruit and go over offense on the board with him to get a sense of how he processes and thinks about the game.

Ideally, that would happen on campus on an unofficial visit. But sometimes recruits won't take the unofficial visits without having already received a scholarship offer.

"The [recruiting] process is going faster and faster with people offering freshman and sophomores, and I think they're just throwing offers out and hoping they hit on somebody," Kelly said. "I think it has [made things harder]. And the kids feel like, 'Well you don't like me because you haven't offered.' Well, I don't know if I like you because I haven't met you yet."

Stanford coach David Shaw, like many coaches, puts an importance on getting recruits to camp to evaluate their processing ability.

"I like to see when he goes from his primary to his secondary and third read," Shaw said. "The timeframe for him to see it, diagnose it and get the ball out of his hands. That usually shows processing speed, to see it and get it out of his hands quickly."

At camps, Shaw likens giving quarterback recruits new plays and concepts to the processing speed of a computer. "How quickly can you diagnosis it and make a decision?" Shaw said.

Everyone agrees that time with quarterbacks helps clear the fog of mystery in how well they process. Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald says his program takes concepts that teams use at the NFL Combine to evaluate high school quarterbacks.

Fitzgerald and the Northwestern staff pull out a series of a quarterback recruit's plays and grills them on what they're seeing. What was called? What's the protection? Can you check off the play? He adds: "If we call apples, do you only look left? If we call oranges do you only look to the right?"

Fitzgerald says that conversations with both the high school coach, coordinator and independent quarterback coach can also help piece together the quarterback's processing ability. "It's like putting a jigsaw puzzle together," Fitzgerald said.

In the NFL's quarterback evaluation, the proliferation of simplified college spread offenses has made the evaluation of processing more complex. Rams coach Sean McVay told Yahoo Sports at the QB Collective this summer that he's always certain not to hold the system against the quarterback.

"You never want to punish a guy for not getting exposed to certain looks or operating out of a certain system," McVay said. "There are so many nuances to that position, but I think it's a product of what he's being asked to do. How quickly do you see him process based on what you anticipate that concept is for?"

Hewlett points out that much of high school quarterback recruiting is done on pure physical talent and through traditional paradigms. For example, 6-foot-4 quarterbacks are almost always going to have more offers than 5-foot-11 quarterbacks.

Hewlett makes an interesting point at the NFL level, as he notes that the physical difference between the eighth-best quarterback in the NFL and the 25th-best is slim. At that level, they look for context clues that show the quarterback's mind is working fast. Hewlett says that a throw that arrives early with enough velocity and arc is a sign of ability to process and anticipate. A quarterback's feet can be a window into his mind, as calm feet show a comfort in what a quarterback sees. Happy feet show a disrupted mind.

Hewlett says variables offer important clues: "Is the ball coming out on time or does he look hesitant? When he connects with a receiver, is it in rhythm or is it more reactionary? Is there timing with accuracy? Is the throw late or flat?"

One of the looming existential conversations about evaluating processing explains in part why it's still layered in mystery: "Is processing innate or can it be taught?" Shaw, a former NFL quarterback coach, is convinced that some of it has to be natural. "We can't build it from zero," he said.

Senior Bowl executive director Jim Nagy, a longtime former NFL scout, uses Brady as the example for the "innate quality" in processing. "That's what made Brady so good, the game has happened slow for Tom," he said. "That's one thing that got overlooked at Michigan."

Can technology change the mystery and help quantify the way that quarterbacks get developed and hone in on weaknesses? Shaw thinks so, as he's an advocate of reps on virtual-reality machines.

"It works," Shaw said. "What the eyes see, the brain believes, and now that's getting an extra 20 minutes, 30 minutes of 'practice,' which counts toward your 10,000 hours to be an expert at something."

Two men with PhDs in cognitive neuroscience have dug deep on attempting to quantify the brain's processing ability in football and baseball. Scott Wylie and Brandon Ally are co-founders of SportsSense, which works with three NFL teams, three Power Five football teams and one MLB team in each division. (They also have begun testing elite quarterbacks at the QB Collective.)

Wylie said in a phone interview that factors they can quantify in quarterbacks by using cognitive brain-testing techniques include impulse control, tracking capacity and how the brain picks up subtle tendencies and patterns. All are critical amid the uncontrolled chaos of the quarterback's pocket.

Wylie scoffs at tests like the Wonderlic, long a barometer for NFL intellect, and says that SportsSense can measure things like a quarterback's likelihood to make impulsive mistakes while under pressure. "It's like a combine for the brain," Wylie said. "We are in the business of quantifying instincts."

While there's serious and furious work to control the variables, the most important position in sports remains the trickiest to evaluate. And that's why nearly every year, two billion-dollar businesses struggle to identify and develop the right people at the most important position.

Andrew Heaney dominates and Mike Trout homers in Angels' win - Los Angeles Times

Posted: 20 Aug 2019 02:20 PM PDT

Mike Trout matched the MLB lead with his career-best 42nd homer, Andrew Heaney had a career-high 14 strikeouts without a walk over eight innings and the Los Angeles Angels beat the Texas Rangers 5-1 in the first game of a day-night doubleheader Tuesday.

Trout lined a two-run shot into the left field seats immediately after David Fletcher led off the game with a single off Joe Palumbo (0-2). It was Trout's 10th homer this year against the Rangers, matching the most ever by an opponent against them in the same season.

The doubleheader opener was the makeup of the July 1 game that was postponed after pitcher Tyler Skaggs was found dead in his hotel room the last time the Angels played in Texas. The coroner hasn't released a cause of death for Skaggs, who was 27.

Heaney (3-3), who was one of the Skaggs' best friends, allowed consecutive one-out singles in the first inning. The lefty then retired 16 batters in a row until Willie Calhoun's two-out homer in the sixth, one of only four hits he allowed.

On a sunny day when the temperature reached 100 degrees during the game, Heaney threw 79 of his 108 pitches for strikes.

Luis Rengifo also hit a two-run homer, a two-run shot in the fifth that made it 5-0.

Trout just missed two more homers. He pulled a towering flyball that went just left of the foul pole — there was a crew chief review by the umpires just to make sure — and he tripled high off the 14-foot wall in left in the ninth.

Palumbo was added from Triple-A Nashville as the 26th player for the doubleheader. The lefty lasted only 1 2/3 innings, leaving because of a blister on his left thumb after a 1-2 pitch to Trout in the second inning. Palumbo struck out two and walked two while allowing three runs.

Cody Bellinger of the Dodgers and Mike Trout of the Angels are putting together staggering offensive seasons. They also are close in most statistical categories. Here's a daily look at their production:
