Be prepared: The much anticipated limited edition Lion King makeup collection by renowned celebrity makeup artist Sir John and Luminess Cosmetics is hitting shelves tomorrow. Judging from the buzz it's gotten, it'll probably sell out faster than the gazelles that leap across the screen in the 1994 original animated Lion King. Sir John counts Beyoncé, Serena Williams, Karlie Kloss, Naomi Campbell, Joan Smalls among his famous clientele, which is fitting since Beyoncé plays Nala in the upcoming new film, hitting theaters July 19.

To get inspiration for the line, Sir John visited Africa. "I spent a ton of time in South Africa, in Capetown and Johannesburg; I adore it," says Sir John, who is also co-executive producer of American Beauty Star. "I went on safari for the first time. The rhinos came right up to the truck, we were in the lion's pit—just seeing animals that way took me aback. When you get a chance to get out of the US and see what real dirt and real clay look like, it's so fertile. African clay has so many shades of reddish brown and warm brown. The landscape is what inspired me. One thing about Lion King is you don't necessarily have a Disney princess that inspires you, like Cinderella. Lion King is all about the atmosphere, it's all about the vibe, so hopefully I did it justice by paying tribute to the landscape and how organic the scenery is."

Those striking earth tones take center stage in the collection, which includes an eyeshadow palette, a contour palette, a highlighter/bronzer, two shades of matte lipstick, two liquid lipsticks shades, and a tinted lip balm. Every item has amazing color payoff. "If you look at the eyeshadow palette you'll see these natural clean browns and wearable colors for people who are minimalists," Sir John says. "And for people who like extra drama, there are some beautiful jewel tone shades, like a purple that looks like a sunset. All of those colors are inspired by nature; even the sculpting palette is very natural in its tones. If you take the textures of the eyeshadows, it's serious pigment. I just need to tap it—you can even use your fingers (to apply it)."

Sir John had a say in the sophisticated, striking packaging from start to finish. Though the film is pure Disney, the aesthetic is all grown up. "I fall in love with product from the outside," he says. "It's not a juvenile collection, it's something you can hold. As you become more mature and get into your career, your packaging changes and the products that you source changes. You don't want to whip out a dollar lip balm when you're at a dinner—you want to have a beautiful compact that shows your station in life. As you move up, you evolve as well. I wanted to make sure that the girl who knows quality is going to want to hold this compact at dinner and not run to the restroom and hide it."

It was also important to Sir John that the collection work for the Lion King's global audience. "As a makeup artist, I have such a diverse group of women who I work with, so I have to make sure that this translates to everyone from Harlem to Hong Kong," Sir John says. "In terms of complexion it has to be for the girl who is super fair, like Nicole Kidman's complexion, to Lupita's complexion. They're both looking at me at the same time to make sure I get it right. So many other makeup artists have the luxury to work with one demographic, but I think the most modern way forward is to have a global complexion in mind. You want to make sure that all girls are invited to the party."

Of course, Sir John is also paying homage to the fans of the original Disney animated Lion King. "This is a love letter to the moms who were kids back in 1994," he says. "I was one of those children. Now most of those women are having families of their own and they're taking their kids for the first time to see the movie. It's like a time capsule to those women."

We know there's one mom who approves of the line: None other than Beyoncé. "I wanted to show her something that was real, so I waited until the packaging was done so I had a real product," Sir John says. "She was like, 'oh my god, this is so good; I need five boxes.' Getting her support on any project is so cool. A lot of people say, 'what do you get inspired by?' Being around really impactful women who are so badass and super strong, there's all the inspiration you need. You don't need much inspiration when you're next to a woman who does a project like Lemonade or the Super Bowl. It moves culture. I grew up around a really strong mom. Strong women have really taught me."

Be like Beyoncé and get your inner Nala on before the collection drops on luminessbeauty.com on June 15. Use the pre-sale code 'UNLK367' to shop at 9PM EST on Friday, June 14th.

White Eyeliner Is Everywhere This Summer, So I Tried It - Yahoo Lifestyle

Posted: 14 Jun 2019 11:29 AM PDT

I want to be the person who's always trying new makeup trends. It's so easy to convince myself that I'll wear the neon pink eyeshadow, metallic lipgloss, or extreme contour that I've hoarded in my apartment. But the truth is, no matter how appealing a trend, I rarely break free from my daily look of natural skin, winged eyeliner, and a nude lip.

So imagine my delight when I noticed a trend on Instagram that was totally within my wheelhouse. Every time I opened the app, white liquid eyeliner, usually applied in a bold wing, was popping up on celebrities and influencers. It even made its way onto the Pose season two promos.

Graphic, '60s inspired eyeliner has been having a moment for a while now, but it's usually done in a bright neon or creamy pastel. White is a refreshing contrast. In art, white is the absence of color, so it's almost like an anti-eyeliner. It still makes a big statement, but because it's a neutral, it feels a little more approachable, and you don't have to worry about matching other makeup or your outfit. It's crisp and graphic like a classic white shirt, but doesn't have the vintage connotations that black does. Plus, it will really pop with a (safe) summer tan.

As someone who has a cat eye down pat and is terrified of wearing color on my eyes (plus has no idea how to blend eyeshadow), this is the perfect trend for me. It's a fun way to switch up my makeup and make me feel like part of the it-crowd without stepping too far outside of my comfort zone. So I challenged myself to try the trend for a week.

Since I'm so comfortable in a cat eye, I figured white eyeliner would be an easy switch. I was wrong. While a swipe of black eyeliner instantly adds definition to my eyes and wakes up my whole face, I found white did the opposite. It made me look a little sleepy and washed out, almost like a haunted doll which is….not the look I'm going for. The first time I tried it out, it stayed on my face for a total of 15 minutes before I wiped it off. Granted, I was having a terrible skin day and just not feeling myself overall, so I think I wanted to avoid any makeup that would call attention to myself. I gave it a shot the next night and went much harder on my foundation, which definitely helped me feel less like a drowned rat. I wore it out to a party and got several compliments, but still didn't feel 100 percent comfortable in it.

The first time I wore white eyeliner out of the house. Not bad, but not great.

I reached out to makeup artists Georgie Eisdell and Naoko Scintu, who did the above looks on Sophie Turner and Jodie Comer respectably, to school me on how to get the look to work.

Step one is choosing the right eyeliner. In order to get a really graphic look, you need a liner that's fully opaque and has a nice thin tip. Both Scintu and Eisdell are huge fans of the Dior On Stage liners, and Eisdell used the Stila Stay All Day liner on Turner, which was my personal favorite out of the bunch I tried.

Both artists stress the importance of a sharp, clean line. "It's easier for the color to get into the base of your lashes, which doesn't look so great," says Scintu. "It's best to apply the colored liner before you curl your lashes or do your mascara." She also recommends taking a mini cotton swab (she likes the Muji ones) to the root of your lashes to make sure they stay super black. In the same vein, Eisdell recommends using a Q-tip or makeup brush dipped in makeup remover to make sure the wings are super sharp.

As for looking dead, Eisdell says that's a common concern when giving this trend a try. "I would make sure to use a lot of mascara—push and wiggle it right up at the root of your lashes," she says. "I also like to do a very fine black liner tight on the lash line to bring out eye shape." That was light bulb tip for me. It helps gives the subtle definition of traditional liner, but still lets the white shine.

Scintu says the look reminds her of being on vacation in Italy and to really embrace that vibe. "You want bronzed skin and a pop of orangey pink on your cheeks. The contrast of the white liner on sun-kissed skin is stunning." She also recommends a liquid bronzer, so I popped on some Chantecaille Gel Bronzer and felt immediately better. I also found putting on lip gloss made a considerable difference and helped bring some life back to my face.

After taking Eisdell and Scintu's advice. Much better!

So is white eyeliner the easy, breezy summer makeup lewk I had hoped for? Not really. It turns out it's more high maintenance than my trusty black (it took me about 40 minutes to fully beat my face for the photo above). That being said, I think the extra effort paid off, and I really ended up being into the finished look. Next time I would add a little shimmer shadow to make it look more ethereal than graphic, but it makes me feel very artsy. I also love how the crisp white brings out my green eyes. Looks like I'll be embracing my inner Bronze Goddess until the next trend rolls around.

Brands Actually Giving Back To The LGBTQ+ Community During Pride Month

Brands Actually Giving Back To The LGBTQ+ Community During Pride Month

Every June, it seems like brands everywhere unleash their own Pride Month collections and splash rainbows on everything. It's fun to see the excitement of Pride taking over, but the commercialization of the important month for many LGBTQ people doesn't always translate to companies actually supporting the community.

One great way to support the LGBTQ community is to donate directly to organizations that work for equality, including options like the Human Rights Campaign and The Trevor Project. (If you donate by clicking on these links, 100% of your money will go directly to those organizations.) Or, you can shop directly on Etsy at these queer-owned shops, where you can find handmade inclusive pins, artwork and more ― not just in June, but all year long.

If you're going to shop at a big retailer, here are some suggestions for brands that are giving back this year in more tangible ways, whether through substantial donations, inclusive products or services, job opportunities, or advocacy and political action.

Take a look below:

One-hundred percent of sales from their 2019 Pride collection will benefit the It Gets Better Project.

One-hundred percent of net profits from the ASOS DESIGN x glaad collection are donated to GLAAD.

The retailer will donate 50% of the purchase price of each item in its Equality Collection to the United Nations Foundation in support of the UN Free And Equal Campaign for LGBTI equality.

One-hundred percent of proceeds from Fossil's limited-edition Pride Month watch case will benefit the Hetrick-Martin Institute.

Through July 6, Gap will donate 15% of sales from the Gap + Pride Collection to the United Nations Foundation in support of the UN Free & Equal Campaign for LGBTI equality.

For this year's Pride celebration, 10% of the global sales price from the "Stay True, Stay You" collection will support the work of the UN's Free And Equal campaign.

One-hundred percent of net proceeds from the Levi's Pride Collection will go to OutRight Action International, working to advance human rights for LGBTQ people all over the world.

The makeup brand is donating $500,000 to GLAAD over the next two years in honor of Viva Glam's 25th anniversary and supporting more than 20 local Pride events.

The fashion retailer is donating 20% or more of the sale price from every Pride + Joy item to The Trevor Project. It will also be participating in 24 Pride parades nationwide and hosting special Pride events at select stores.

Nordstrom will donate 100% of net sales from the purchase of their "Free to be Me" T-shirt to the Human Rights Campaign Foundation.

The beauty retailer created a limited edition #Lipstories Pride lipstick and will donate $1 from the sale of each lipstick to support LGBTQ organizations. They also offer free "Bold Beauty" makeup classes that cater to the transgender community.

The TODD SNYDER X CHAMPION Pride Collection features T-shirt, hoodies and sweatpants with rainbow lettering. Twenty percent of sales will be donated to the National Park Foundation to support Stonewall National Monument.
