Simon King, Pāmu's head of communication, says New Zealand deer milk is the key ingredient in Deerest cosmetics.

A Kiwi farm worker who noticed deer milk made her hands softer unwittingly sparked the idea for cosmetics now on being sold in South Korea.

Pāmu deer milk is the key active ingredient in a range of beauty products which could carve out a niche in the lucrative Asian market.

The skin care products are being marketed by Yuhan Corporation, the country's leading pharmaceutical company, under the Deerest brand.

It is the first time New Zealand deer milk has been sold for use in the Asian beauty industry and comes after Pāmu signed a partnership agreement with Yuhan in December.

The idea of using deer milk in cosmetics came about after a technologist working on Pāmu's deer farm near Gore noticed the difference it made to her skin.

The technologist, who worked outside all year, had very rough, dry and calloused hands.

After cleaning the filters at the end of milking each day, she noticed how soothing the deer milk felt on her hands.

After just two weeks of milking, she said her hands were noticeably softer and her nails were stronger, and the idea for the product was born.

It's not yet known if Yuhan will bring the range to New Zealand.

It's not yet known if Yuhan will bring the range to New Zealand.

Chief executive Steven Carden said Pāmu, formerly known as Landcorp, had been working closely with Yuhan while it developed the products over the last year .

Speaking at Fieldays, Carden said the Korean beauty market was worth around US$13 billion (NZ$20b) annually.

"While early days, the investment in time and innovation that we have put into developing deer milk as a food and cosmetics ingredient is showing a positive future."

The Deerest range includes a rich cream, face milk and spa mask and the products sell for NZ$60-80 in Yuhan's New Origin stores and online.

Although Yuhan had plans to look for opportunities to sell the range further afield, it wasn't yet known if that would include New Zealand.
